Dear Patir,

The National Education Policy 2020 (NEP), which was approved by the Union Cabinet of India on 29 July 2020, outlines the vision of India's new education system. A sweeping change cutting across pre-primary, lower & upper primary, middle, high schooling, and on to the collegiate studies. The new policy replaces the previous National Policy on Education, 1986. The policy is a comprehensive framework for elementary education through higher education as well as vocational training in both rural and urban India. The policy aims to transform India's education system by 2040.

Though there are many contentious issues such as:
1. Languages & core subjects in the academic stream
2. A single policy for pan India
3. Re-formulating the stream of study from preKG to college studies, entrance & other examinations
4. Choice of vocational training, diplomas for those failing in their higher studies
5. Taking away the education system from the Concurrent list of Centre & State domain, etc.

Shortly after the release of the policy, the government clarified that no one will be forced to study any particular language and that the medium of instruction will not be shifted from English to any regional language. The language policy in NEP is a broad guideline and advisory in nature; and it is up to the states, institutions, and schools to decide on the implementation. Education in India is a Concurrent List subject till recently/till pre-NEP. What happens hereafter is the moot point.

The NEP 2020 is being debated all over the country - for and against. A few states raised some issues regarding some provisions of the NEP. There are many serious issues as well. Though the government sought comments from all, including states, institutions, parents & students, there has been a general feeling that many of their views, suggestions, modifications, etc., have not been incorporated in the NEP in the present form. We have to wait and see what happens during the academic year; the uncertainties of reopening schools & colleges, which is already delayed, still persist.
