Hi
Generally increments are given on completion of one year of service with an organisation. Increments are given on the basis of the performance of the employer. if the employee is absenting frequently it leads to indiscipline and tent amounts to discipline action by way of no increments till she or he improve their performance.

Dear Meenu,
If you are paying equal or more than the minimum wages of particular skill of employee as per state regulation, then there is no legal requirement of annual increment.
Its totally depends on company policy,
In your case the employee is absenting frequently, please evaluate her percentage of absentism and compare with company policy for % of absentism(like as <10% absentism employee will get annual increment ,if it is more than >10% then increment postponed for another one year).
You issue a notice that as per company policy your increment has been postponed for another one year and company will review your performance(absentism, attitude, skill, knowledge, rec overy, team work,customer/client/seniors satisfaction level etc) and let you know next year on this.

You will have to decide your own policy on this. You can decide condition of minimum attendance and punctuality to qualify for the increment. But also look at the reasons for leaves/absence (is it sickness, accident, unavoidable circumstances etc.) Make sure to communicate to the employee the reason for not granting increment.

Hi All,
Normally first increment is to be paid on completion of one year service from the date of joining.
But it is contradictary when employees are eligible for annual increment based on individual perforamce and Company performance. Company performance shall be considered from bottom line and top line growth during the particular financial year.
It is very difficulat to judge Company performance before end of financial year while calculating first increment of any employee on completion of first year service from the date of joining.
Is there any other method to make performance management system more effective ? Many organizations have fixed 1st April as the date of annual increment in all cases. Employees completing six months and above as on 1 April are eligible for first/annual increment.

It is good to recognise the employee once in a year and it is good to time it on April 1, 2009 to help employees in their taxation matters. It is good to have a cut of date and I would suggest 3 months as the minimum period of service for eligibility for increments. Increments could be paid to new employees based on their performance score and the period of service.
