Its nice you have ultimately got a private job with considerable hike and it is going to very challenging and high exposure giving opportunity i feel.
If company pay such a good hike, ultimately they also planned something to give you challenging exp ahead.
I would rather say is a golden opportunity.
This global slowdown does not affect larger in india as india has got good consumer set up and things will go on but may be little slow.
I would say, if you work in a challenging admosphere, you would with in a short span of time get a larger experinece and exposure and reach your ambition to the highest which you cant imagine at all at your life time
go ahead

Dear Shash!
In my point of view you should switch your job if you are very sure about job security. Dont think about World Economic crisis as many companies are performing better than ever in the these crisis days. For example my company gained the hieghest ever profit this year. We are facing (here in Pakstan) energy crisis like Electricity and Gas and you know how both are important for textile sector, you cant run your company even for one day without Gas, but again due to dollor fluctuation we are able to achieve this land mark. We are continuously hiring new staff for our new projects. So being Engineer you should never hesitate to switch as there are many opportunities for engineers in your Country and Gulf as well

hello to all,
thanks for all the input. in india recently power sector (generation/transmission) has been made open to the private players. many of the giants in the pvt industries are now taking up projects in the power sector. They are doing their best to attract engineers working with the government sector by offering good salary hikes. In the country on a whole, the demand of power is increasing every year. This sector is set to witness a lot of growth in the coming few years as electricity is the very base of all human life.
I am young and willing to put in all my efforts to build a career. I also feel this offer is a good opportunity for me to learn and grow. The government offices still work at a snails pace. I too am excited about this opportunity but the only thing that everyone is advising me is to be aware of this economic slowdown period. What i wonder is that if any organisation is hiring guys during the economic slowdown period by offering them good money, surely it won't lay them off when the economy picks up again ??

Dear Blue.quill,
there is no term like job security/job unsecurity if you are a performing candidate. No company wheather private or govt would ever ask a high performer to leave albiet the entire organisation is closed down which might not be in your case.
if you have confidence in your self then go ahead and grab the opportunity, the only thing i wud caution you is about cultural fitment, which you may find difficult whn u switch from govt to pvt.
if you think you can adjust to the pressures of pvt organisation then dont hesitate n move ahead. all well you will see your self at much greater heights in 3 years to come than what you could achieve in govt job.

Dear Mr,
You being an engineer in power sector, you have ample opportunity to grow within your government organization as Government is doing all the possbile move in expanding its production in power section. Now at this juncture, when downward trend in economy, there are some good private sector try to grab right resources from Government sector and i am not sure that it would benefit you in the long run as short term returns might be rosy. Please analyse appropriately with pros and cons and take the decision accordingly.

From India, Bangalore
Again I repeat my suggestion and the same is expressed by Mr. P Ramakrishnan, you have to analyze before you take decision. I emphasize Govt. would always be better with their system of evaluation and elevation, considering their periodical pay commission. For example, LIC has major sharehold in market in insurance sector, why? Because of their already derived process flow. Think of your benefits from Govt. sector, not only for you, but also to your family. As rightly said by Mr. Ramakrishnan, the pvt. sector might pull out people from govt. sector and expect you to get their papers moved in various govt. office (mostly in unethical manner), might be rosy for next few years. The same thing happened for telecommunication sector too, but still MTNL & BSNL rule the market. But at the end of the day, Govt. job is best of all.
So, Stick ON my dear friend.
Regards,
A V Ramanan:)
