Dear Seniors,

I have done BBA and now doing MBA from Sikkim Manipal University (Distance learning). I am working in construction field from last three years in HR & Admin. dept. Initial I was working at project site but after one and half year i got promoted and transferred to HO but unfortunately that company was suddenly windup after my transfer and i could not get the chance to work & learn the corporate culture of HR. Now i am again working at Head Office of one growing construction company and i am leading the HR & Admin team of all sites as well HO.

But I want to let you know all things frankly that I am also not well trend HR professional. I am also not very much aware about the all functions of HR.

but I am very much thankful to "citeHR" that helps me to get all required drafts, formats and lot more which is helping me to lead the HR team in my existing company.

But I am worried about carrier that I will be able or not to get good job in reputed companies. as I am not getting the chances to learn & work practically in HR field. I am also looking for change in reputed firm. because In my existing company HR roll & contribution is almost zero.

Seniors please suggest me how can I improve my self for HR profession. What are the things I can apply in my existing company so that the management noticed me and appreciate my work.

Dear Ajay
Please read the BOCW Act & Rule, Contract Labour (R&A) Act & Rule, Interstate Migrant Workmen Act & Rules. You will get some idea about the statutory compliance at Construction Site. Please go through the Shops and Establishment Act under which your HO is registered. Please do visit the construction site and check their records for its proper maintenance. Please make sure the safety, hygiene & welfare measures provided to the workmen are maintained.
As you mentioned that your company is growing company, please check for HR Policies and develop the same or create new. If not please start maintaining all the staff (HO & Site Based) records.
In your free time please browse CiteHR and you will get complete help regarding how to proceed further. Whenever you find any difficulties please do ask, and our learned members will surely help you in all possible ways.
Wish you all the best Ajay.

Dear Ajay,
No body can stop you, If you want to learn. Take a trip to other sections of your HR department, Try to communicate other employees there, Establish the healthy relationship and ask them about their work procedures and SOP. You can also ask them for their job description and try to get access how they perform their duties according to their job descriptions. Try to learn and memorized every thing you see, heard and observed in other section and implement them at the right time in front of right people. Remember! little stones of knowledge can build a bridge towards your success

Hey Ajay,

Always in life you will find yourself confronted with unfamiliar situations like these.

And often in professional contexts these will be more as these shape the very quality of your work experience.

Fortunately, you are not the only to have traveled through this road. So, fear not!

It has happened to all of us and that is one specific way we have learnt. Many will agree with that.

What you rather need to do now is look at the things you know about HR (processes) and start with those.

Automatically, as you interact with the business environment and people you will begin to know what works,

and what needs to be changed and what needs to get done.

S.Bhaskar has given you the compliance and policies angle necessary for your HR department and role. Start with that.

Those are fundamentals of setting up an HR department in any industry on this Earth.

Alongwith compliance and policies what you need to know in time is what is important to your business - how it makes money,

what the long term objectives are, what the short term goals are and what strategy your business has adapted as per its growth cycle.

This will not be very easily available to understand, nevertheless, you must take interest in it, ask for it, and develop your understanding about it .

What you do in HR has to be aligned periodically to the business.

Trust yourself for now and just know that eventually you will come into your own and take control.

That's the way of life. For now focus on the basics which you have been made aware of.

Good wishes.

Andy
