In my present company designation is as follows
1. Trainee - R&D
2. Asst. Engineer - R&D
3. Engineer - R&D
4. Sr. Engineer - R&D
5. Asst. Manager -R&D
6. Manager -R&D
7.Head R&D
8. VP - R&D

i think the line of designation from Trainee to Senior Engineer is perfectly alright - in case you are using R&D and Engineer interchangeably OR you can make the starting designation as Trainee - Engineer
