Hi all,
I have been terminated because of poor performance. In reality, they wanted me to resign, but I refused due to my commitments. They put me on a performance improvement plan (PIP) and then let me go. My concern now is whether I will be able to find a job elsewhere. Will a potential employer refuse to hire me if they discover that I was terminated for poor performance during the background verification process?
Kindly suggest. I am extremely worried.

It is unfortunate that you have been fired. Employers who feel that an employee is not up to their expectations can ask the employee to leave. No law compels that a poor performer should be retained. If they had given you an opportunity to leave, you should have accepted it. Your worry that you may not get another opportunity is valid because nobody will hire a person who was fired by an employer for poor performance. Now, the only remedy available is to admit the mistake and submit a resignation letter pre-dated, and get relieved with a certificate that does not indicate termination or poor performance.

No step to salvage your record may actually help erase an employer's finding/remark on record that your employment was terminated on account of your poor performance. Filing a resignation request post-termination may not get you a clean chit. Keep trusting in your suitability for employment elsewhere.

The suggestion/advice given by Mr. Madhu T K is practical. No employer wants to ruin the future of an employee; rather, they will help in whatever way possible, but within the ambit of their standard procedures. So, the poster can approach the management of the company and submit an earlier dated resignation to get his relieving order, mentioning the reason for separation as resignation. By and large, HR managers shall be hesitant to recruit a person whose services have been terminated by a previous employer.
