Hi Folks, I have received and accepted a job offer from a reputed company and post that I realised that I am a month pregnant and on ethical grounds informed the same to potential employer after few days of acceptance of offer. Is there any chances that they would refuse to hire me?

Statutorily, pregnancy is not a disqualification for appointment as an employee in industrial employment. But, the statutory obligation to provide maternity leave discourages employers to recruit pregnant women afresh. After the enhancement of maternity leave to 26 weeks, not only the employers are hesitant, but also they indulge in coercive moves to ask the women to resign the moment they become aware of the fact of pregnancy. Particularly, if it is the initial stage of appointment, certainly the cancellation of the offer of job is the consequence.
However, there may be exceptions. The attitude of the employers, nature and responsibilities of the job offered are the factors in this regard. As such, one cannot give a definite answer to the poster's query either way.
