Dear All,

I finished my BA in International Business after which I worked in Business Development, HR Development and Recruitment roles for about 2.5 years. I have recently finished my Masters in Human Resource Management. My future career plans would be to start again from a recruitment role (where my strengths are) and then branch into HR administration in the same company/ industry (my career goal is to be a HR generalist or go into a line specialization).

My concern is that whether companies agree to such a shift between the internal divisions in HR? Most companies have specific HR divisions like recruitment, training and administration, and I want to know if there is a possibility of an employee to change between these divisions i.e. do they allow a horizontal career growth between its functions?

As my background, interest and experience is in recruitment, I thought right to start my career initially with the recruitment focus, then branch in as an internal recruiter and moving into HR administration from there. I am not sure that this plan will work in the Indian scenario. Can anyone throw light on my confusion?

If someone can share their views, comments and advise on the above predicaments based on their experience, I would very grateful.

Thank you.

Dear KK
Theoratically there is no problem in switching with in one division i.e HR Division. I am not in a position to say something about indain scnerio, but in general there is a connection between recruiters and training & development.
While administration is rather different incomparisoin to recuritment.
So if you built your experties in recruitment side then you can switch to other departments with in HR(in my opinion).
They better suggestion can be provided to you by some experienced indian HR professional.
take care

Hi,
An input to your querries: The current scenario in the Industry seggregates HR from recruitment. It has branched out the functions as Recruitment and General HR.
Recruitment comes more through expertise whereas to get into General HR the person should have obtained a formal degree/education in the area (eg MBA, PGDBA etc) and ofcourse experience comes thereafter.. This works in the Companies.. in case of some Training institutes things might be different.
But there is no hard and fast rule you cannot move on from one function of HR to another..it can always happen in same/different organization but based on the eligibility and performance driven..
I would suggest you start your career with Recruitment and meanwhile work upon enhancing your skills, knowledge and education that would later help you switching to different fields in HR..
Best Wishes!
