Hi All,
In our current organization, we frequently require resources having very good communication skills (english) with our sales dept.
But our exp. is that it's becoming very tough to find out such guys.
Nowadays, even engg. graduates are very poor when it comes to communicate in english.
Let us share our experiences about the same & the steps we can take to overcome the same.
Thanks & Regards

Hi Sanket,
Your concern is very true, faced by many HRs in the market.. infact it is even more tougher to get a person with tech skills and good communication skills. A week back we had a position to close for Structural design engineer, it was urgent, he would be sent to US OJT, but the among almost 120 people interviewed only 18 very better (above avg )in their comms, otherwise rest of them are very cheap in the market say around 3LPA, just becoz of the comms we made an offer for 7.2LPA...
It looks like People with good coms are already poached by call centers .... freshers are lured by high salaries, good infrastructures, medical facilities, pick n drop..Gym...pool...pubs...salsa...many more, infact now a days call centers also taking Pharmacist, engineers, MCA, BCA....any grads...recently at dentist also got an oppurtunity.. if the professionals are ready for the instant easy salaries.......its going to be very hard for companies around......
Pls correct me if iam wrong..

Truly said ,it has become very difficult to get people with good communication. Also
with BPO industry in boom these days its very difficult to attract resources for the other industries and for other profiles like Business Development ,as the kind of package BPO's offer is very high.
The kind of steps that we can take is arrange for soft skills training programmes .

Try Good Hotel Mgt. Colleges like Govt. IHMs (google NATIONAL COUNCIL FOR HOTEL MANAGEMENT PUSA) , prefrebly through web portrals coz the placment cells in these colleges are no good . with the recent changes these guys are being trained in finance, and hr too .

I have also gone through these kind of situations where communication was essential for a particular post but i hardly got any candidates for that position.
I completely agree with sari....
As far as freshers are concerned we get candidates easily but senior experience people with good communication is really becoming difficult to hunt...

hey people.

lets talk abt wht we can do with the guys who have avg communications skills. Lets not talk abt BPO's and others. There is a problem lets sort that out. When you say they have average communication skills u hire them....well why dont u provide them a 10 day training program on communication skills and align a trainer to judge their communication skills. You could get trainers on a contract basis and set targets accordingly. If you makeyour organisation an english speaking zone i am sure that we can do a lil better on communication skills as this would enhance your thought process and u would think in english and speak in english. there would be nothing called as mother tongue influence.

as someone said......think english and speak english..this is what will help ppl enhance their comm skills . U tell me how many of u talk in english in ur organisation. and how good are u in communication skills...did u chk you communication skills...anytime guys...........

try this out

it will help to an extent guys.

ppl just do not get excellent in communication skills.....untill they practice it....so u could start off...

Hi Shailu,
I completely agree with you...
We ourselves don't practice English regularly in our organisation...
Well i have informed in my organisation that we all will be talking in English from today onwards and they we all should be open for corrections...
I am going to start a fine system also on this,. i.e., i am going to charge rupee 1 as a fine if any one talks in any other language besides English.
I think this will definitely help us to improve our language and will give all of us a confidence to talk to others fluently.

Dear Sanket,

Let's accept this situation. It is the reality we have to live with for sometime now till the finishing schools come up in good numbers.

Now, we can't sit quite saying we are not getting people with the necessary skills. So, what's the solution?

Divide the desired skills in to

a) Threshold Skills - MUST haves

b) Differentiating Skills - Desirables (separates Good / Above avg. from the pool w.r.t other skills , comm. skills in this case)

c) Rare Skills - like... Excellent Communication skills along with the technical knowledge just right for the job. (separates best from the rest)

Now,

We will accept that getting the people with rare skills is really rare... so, we can try and get the people with the Threshold skills (TOP performers in this category) and people with Good / Above Avg performers from the pool of people and then train them on the missing links (Communication skills, email etiquettes, General selling skills specific to the job etc... ) before you actually induct them in to your organization.

If i have missed anything ... Please update.
