A comprehensive ban on production and sale of gutka will come into effect in Gujarat from today, as per the notification issued by the state government. However, there is a catch in the notification issued: sale of gutka will be prohibited, but one would be free to sell separately tobacco, beetle nut and lime separately. The ban as per provisions of Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 would initially be for one year.

Any violation of ban would attract at least six months of imprisonment and a fine up to Rs 5 lakh, according to the notification. However, the prohibition would not be applicable in respect of 100 per cent export oriented units. The ban will also not be applicable to pan masala. The Global Adult Tobacco Survey of India 2009-10 revealed that 35 per cent adults use tobacco in some form or other, out of which 21 per cent were found to be consuming smokeless tobacco (like gutka). As per this survey, smokeless tobacco use is more prevalent in Gujarat with 18.4 per cent of the adult population addicted to it. The Maharashtra government had recently imposed a ban on gutka and pan masala. Some other states like Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Bihar had also followed suit.

Gutka may have been banned in Gujarat, but not the separate ingredients it is made of. Effectively, addicts in Gujarat - the unofficial mouth cancer capital of the country - may still be able to consume this deadly tobacco preparation without breaking the law. The positive aspect of the ban, however, is that gutka will no longer be easily available in pouches, restricting access to vulnerable groups, like children.

Thumps up for both valuable posts here.......
Hope that this ban is taken seriously and the rules are followed otherwise if it won't be followed than it will be same as its happening for the smoking which is banned in public but it is not at all taken seriously.
It is just ridiculous when the laws that are made for the betterment are not properly followed. And even though people are being aware of all the negativeness of what they are doing or consuming, they still continue doing the same and when they realize their mistakes, it is too late.
And for everything we can't point out on Govt.. Changes have to be brought by us common people and try to spread it widely.

Dear Friends
The ban is only to create illegal fund generation for the business people and nothing is going to happen with this ban. Rs.100/- liquor is being sold for Rs.250/- as like the Rs.2/- Gutkha will be sold for Rs.5/-. If the police caught someone means the Police will be benefitted and if the case is filed means the Government will get benefitted in the name of fine from the Liquor/Gutka consumer. Still Gujarat is the state having more drinkers /Gutkha Chewers in India.
Anyhow let us welcome this move from the State Government.

Dear RJ
Since last 1 year I am suffering from Back Ache. That's why I am only visiting this site once or twice a day and not regularly sitting.
That is the reason I am not visiting HR Humour section. But I used to watch the jokes in HR Humour. :):):)
