Hello Freinds,
I am an Hr student .Previously I was working with a BPO and I found that the Job of an HR is full of challenges..rather it is a tough uphill task compared to the corporate world.
The increasing Atrition rate,Cntinues Recruitment process ,Seperation mngment and Retention of the Manpower are burning problems..
Kindly add to this disscussion...

hi Rohan,
Even i'm interested in working in hr dept. of a bpo once i complete my mba.
and the reason for this r the challenges only, that u mentioned in ur post. i agree with ur view that life of an hr personnel is full of challenges in bpo. yet its fun.
in fact what is life without challenges and fun.

It is hard to say... for the following reasons
1. It is equally difficult finding a right candidate in a traditional industry [ textile engineers / piping engineers etc.]
2. It is equally difficult retaining them [most of the best engineers are offered jobs by some overseas people and are tough to retain]
3. Continuous recruitment [it is the same in any organisation having high level of white collar jobs....]
Yes, it is partially more challenging working with young people [ generally bachelors] who want to earn high and are not concerned much about job stability.. But it is equally so with
  • a. BPO
    b. IT Sector
    c. Hotel / Service Industry
    d. Insurance Sector
and the list could go on...

Hi
For me, BPO jobs are not really challenging. If that is a challenging one, then why there is a high attrition rate in that industry. People have Monotonous work and their work is similar. The career growth is also very less.i think that BPO jobs are not really a challenging one.

hi jayavel,
this is not regarding the normal bpo jobs of customer care or technical executives. in this discussion, v r talking about the hr jobs in bpo.
it deals with continuous recruitment, training, keeping employees' motivated etc.
sounds interesting.Right............................?

:D Hi !
Agreed with Reena.
I am working in BPO (HR) and in my experience its really difficult to face a challence when you Aquire, Train, Retain for a while .. and the employee leaves you for a raise of Rs. 500 ! (Sounds believable?, but unfortunately true).
The job is challenging, because of Recruitment bottleneck .. and due to the fact that we never had ITeS BPO's 20 Years ago .. and therefore could not learn from past. There is as such no organizational learning. Every BPO in IT Enabled Service has some novel problem, and hence interesting ..
I do agree with Ajmal, BPO's are not alone .. The 4 Sectors Ajmal pointed out faces nearly same set of problems (challenges for HR) ..
In my opinion the word 'challenging' needs a bit refinement .. I get the Grievance Counselling challenging, you may or may not find it so .. and trust me, challenge is everywhere. That's why Corporations require us (HR) .. :D

In many ways yes, but not necessarily.
BPO in India is going through a defining moment. From transactions now processes are being outsourced. Challenges of attrition and thus retention take the forefront. Training extends beyond behavioral and technical skills. It extends to process training as it is migrated to the BPO outfit.
Balanced score card as a concept is getting entrenched in this sector.
It is a HRD issue at the state and national level as well and top agenda for many state governments in India.
Efficiency is key as we have been largely cost players. We are only recently moving into the value delivery game. This makes talent acquisition and development very critical for this dynamic industry which can turn in any direction if the correct steps are not taken by the Industry bodies, organisations and Government. HR has to stay abreast with International HR as well in addition to Indian HR.
So it is a fairly rewarding experience.

Hi Rohan & Team
As a HR Person from a BPO Industry I can say HR job is really challenging one. As u mentioned the reasons are more suitable for the same. The BPO industry consist of IT & ITES Sectors. In terms of process wise yes can say 50% of the BPO jobs are not challenging. But the theme is HR jobs are more challenging in the BPO.
Last three years I am in BPO Industry. Could see various kind of queries & issues. These experience we could not get in other industry. There are employees just moving to other organization just Rs. 500 PM increase or House pick up & drop. The major issue I feel in the BPO industry is Attrition & Retention management, then behavior on the floor, attendance & Employee Satisfaction.

Hi,
I do agree that the job of HR is challenging in the BPO industry. Because the manpower in this industry is very high and this industry works on them. So the role of HR in motivation, retaining, developing is the challenge.
Sir I would like to know what are the qualities looked in the HR professional in this feild.

Hi vanita,
I was previously working with a HR recruiting firm and the company gave us roughly this profile for the HR professional they were looking for their company.
  • 1. Should have and MBA / PG in HR [that implies that the person should have knowledge of all HR functions]
    2. Should be able to conduct stress interviews
The additional things they were looking were
    3. Should have an excellent Communication Skills [English]
    4. Should be ready to work in shifts
    5. Should be ready to travel [for recruiting]
    6. Should be able to do the PR work in case of requirement [with local authorities]
    7. Should have administrative capabilities
This is what this particular [well known] BPO was looking in an HR professional at a junior level. At senior level, they just insist that the HR candidate be from ITES / Hospitality Industry with [X] years of experience. Even I would like to know what is discussed with them [the senior HR guys] in the interview process.
