Hi I work in vizag (Andhra pradesh). I would like to know if there are any exemptions to minimum wages act. I work for a jewellery firm. thanks Vyjayanthi

Though Minimum Wages Act is a central Act the schedule of employment to which this Act applies is added by the respective State Govt. I have not verified the schedule of employment of Andhra Pradesh but I believe that "employment in Shops and Establishments" is covered under the Minimum Wages Act. If so, there is no need to say that employees of jewellery are covered by the Act since the shop comes under 'Shops and Establishments'.
The Minimum Wages Act provides for bare minimum of wages. I don't thing that getting excempted from the operation of this Act would benefit the employer in any way. Therefore, implement the rates as prescribed under the Act.

Unable to understand what type of exemptions you are expecting. If the same is about the payment of wages there is no such exemption. All the workers / employees working either in Factory / shops and establishments should pay the minimum wages under the categories mentioned if not the basic minimum wage. If the same is not complied there will be severe implications, the labour department officials will inspect and impose huge penalities and legal actions. The employer will be in deep trouble. even the same is applicable to all categories of employees ie., regular, casual and contract etc.

Dear Vyjayanthi,
In our opinion we want to ask whether minimum wages are applicabe to your shop & whether there is any exemption regarding the enforcibility of the rates of minimum wages under the M W Act,1948. If you state have declared your businss in schedule employments then there is no exemption regarding payment of minimum wages to the employees for your shop. You may also approach the Labour department office of you area.
Submitted as requested by you.

I just want to know if a man getting more than the limit of minimum wages whether it should be dropped down every year to match the minimum wage
From India, Kolkata
Salary more than minimum wages should be protected and you should not bring it down. Therefore, if your employees are paid more than the bare minimum wages, they should continue to get the higher wages.

Dear Sir, In minimum wages copy they rates are splitted ZONE I, ZONE II and ZONE III.But which zone rates are applicable to VSEZ units, please tell me
From India, Visakhapatnam
Zones put in the notification pertains to the area, like Zone 1 may relate to Corporations and Special Grade Municipalities, Zone 2 may relate to Municipalities and Special Grade Panchayats etc. The explanation should be there in the notification itself. Please read the notification in full before posting.
It is very good if you get information in finger tips but you will never take that information to your mind and will continue to ask for the same again and again. On the otherhand, the information that you get by putting at least a reasonable hardship from yourside will last forever.
