hi
a probationary is a term which an employee acquires the adequate skills to perform the job. Normally, it is the company policy to keep the period for 3 to 6 months. some companies may keep it for one year too. it does have any law to dictate on this period.
in some companies if an employee performance is not satisfactory, then the period will be extended for some more months.

hi nandhini
it is the company policy to fix the period of probation, Normally it could be one year for junior level of employees and 6 months to 3 months for senior staffs.
as far as the labour law is concerned, you may refer to factories act for the definition of probation.
