Dear member,

Productivity is an output. It improves when organisations implement operations management tools and techniques. Some of the prominent tools are:

a) Measuring the process turnaround times of the various process
b) Simplifying the movement of the men and machines
c) Identifying the correct sequence of the various processes to avoid the overlap
d) Measuring the idle time of the humans and machines
e) Measuring the wastage that occurs at the various stages
f) Measuring the Inventory Turnover Ratio (ITR) of the raw materials and taking steps to improve it
g) Measuring Work-in-Process (WIP) inventory and taking steps to reduce it
h) Using the demand forecasting techniques to accurately predict the demand for the finished goods
g) Measuring the Cost of Quality accurately
h) Measuring the Cost of Poor Quality (COPQ) and taking steps to reduce it
I) Using the PERT and CPM tools if there is a scope to implement them

Yes, creativity and innovation are important tools to improve productivity. But these are used primarily in new product development, improving the design of the existing product or solving the problems that occur while running the operations. But before jumping to the creativity and innovation, have you used the routine tools mentioned above? Please check.

Going further, there is a scope to use Operations Research (OR) techniques to improve the operations. However, it requires special expertise to implement them.

Thanks,

Dinesh Divekar
