Dear Experts, Seeking your POVs on weekly offs in hospitals.
XYX hospital gives weekly offs to its staff nurses on a rotational basis (not on Sunday), provided weekly off eligibility is based on how many Sundays fall on a particular month. Example: For September 2024, there are four sun days. The staff nurse offered to take four Mondays off for September. During October 2024, again, there are four sun days, provided weekly offs are scheduled by the supervisor to take between Tuesday and Wednesday.
As per this offer, employees continuously work more than 7 days to get 1 off during Oct 1st week. Here, in this case, the clause of 6 days work and 1 day rest was not followed. Is that right approach for hospitals?

Let suppose the hospital has 6 staff nurses. Nurse 1 will take off on Monday and will work for Tuesday to Sunday. Nurse 2 will take off on Tuesday and work for Wednesday to Monday. nurse 3 will take off day on Thursday and work for Friday to Wednesday and so on.

If there is more than 6 staff nurses , it may be 2/3 nurses rotation in a particular similar manner. Therefore, there will be no day off on Sunday.

The process is wrong.
If you are changing the weekly off, it needs to be brought forward not pushed back.
You cannot have the nurse work for 7 days without a weekly off.
It is a violation of many of the regulations

So if she had Friday off in September, in October it should be Thursday off and in November, Wednesday off

Sunday is not an official holiday/weekly off day for the employee, it can be any day of the week. The establishment(Hospital) remain on working all the seven days. Therefore, employees working on those establishment gets a day of off after six days working. Sunday is the off day if someone is working from Monday to Saturday. Similarly, Monday is weekly off day for one working from Tuesday to Sunday.
The weekly off days are not fixed at whims various aspects are taken into conditions,so that every working days run smoothly with most minimum manpower. And in general all hospitals keeps some department closed on a particular day of the week, thereby on that particular day more employees can be given off days. The weekly off days of an employee can't be changed in every month but in a quarter or half yearly,once roaster completed. It is not possible to say without knowing the working & staff strength of the establishment.the above suggestions are on the basis of general conditions.

This is correct process if the hospital is giving off after 6 days of working on a 7th day, many industries work on rotational shifts and can give off any day of the week.

There is no rule to provide 'Sunday' as a weekly holiday for all employees. There shall be one day as weekly off on any day, it depends on the work roaster provided by the HOD/Establishment concerned. That means an employee will be allowed to avail a 'rest day' and it can be by rotation. Hospital being an essential service operations it is not practical to close the unit for a weekly holiday like any other establishments. The hospital required to remain open 24 x 7 , 365 days. This may not be applicable for clinics where there won't be in-patient facilities and a few staff only working. For the purpose of 'rotational weekly off' a roaster is prepared to indicate who will be on duty in A-B-C shifts and weekly off as well. Normally it's prepared every month or quarterly, at a time. Some units will have flexible system to adjust amongst themselves for accommodating emergency requirements of colleagues so that their needs are taken care of without hassles. At times paramedical & support staff may be required to work on OT in situation where shortage arises & expertise, experienced ones are required and in critical situations. The system of rotation works well not only in health care but in various other sectors as well.
