Dear All,

I am working in HR Dept with one company where we have 6 days (24x7) week working culture with our manufacturing unit having Sunday weekly of as well as Sales and Marketing team have weekly off on alternate Saturday and every Sunday.

I would like to propose 5 days week culture so that all our employees will have weekly off on Saturdays and Sundays.

Hence, I am trying to collect ideas from all my HR fraternity having such 5 days week practices with their 24x7 days running manufacturing unit. Also would like to share your 5 days working practices for Sales & Marketing team.

If anyone of you already have any study report, survey or proposal for the same, kindly share the same with me which will be of help to me.

Your kind support will be highly solicited.

Thanks and Best regards,
Anil

Dear Dr. Anil Kamalia,

It appears from your post that the organization is working for 24 x 7 at the same time manufacturing unit having Sunday weekly off. It is not possible if the weekly off for manufacturing unit is staggered. Otherwise there will be no employees on Sunday at manufacturing unit.

I have worked in my career with one MNC where for manufacturing unit has 6 days work and 2 days staggered off ( 24 x 7). Whereas the Sales & Marketing, accounts, HR etc. support function have 5 days week and Saturday & Sunday off.

The above arrangement has helped to maintain work-life balance for manufacturing unit as well as better productivity than 5 days work and 2 days off.

Thanks & Regards,

Before proposing the proposal for 5 days working from the present 7 days working, you may have to look into the following feasibility.
Workstation availability / the total time taken to convert raw materials into finished goods, and the time taken for all actions during the manufacture of finished goods,(total volume of production in five days) by all workmen ( working in 7 days) in five days working to be carefully studied. Cost benefit analysis to be worked out.
If your manufacturing unit adopts Just-in-time (JIT) manufacturing for your customer, and how do you propose to taken care your customer needs on Saturday and Sunday.

Five day week in manufacturing activity means idling the resources for two days every week. Will it be OK for the management? The machinery involved in production has a definite life and is not affected substantially whether it is utilised 6 days/5 days in a week. The management would look for an early return on the investment made. So reducing the working days is not advisable.

Dear Babu Alexander,

I really appreciate your reply on my above post. Yes, we have manufacturing unit working 24 x 7. I would like to propose five days working to the senior management teams who are responsible for 24 hours duty, but not earning Overtime or having compensatory off facilities mean to say my managers and above team.

I will be highly thankful, if anyone can share their such five days working guideline to my official mail id and

Best regards,
Anil
