The offer letter is indicative of a firm appointment order being made. Offer letter helps a candidate working elsewhere to put in his papers and serve the notice period. An offer letter is generally only one-two paras while appointment order may run into several pages.

Job offer letter is only a selection confirmation letter to enable the candidate to put his paper to hiss current company. It is not a legal document. On the contrary, Offer of Appointment is an employment contract to be signed by both parties (Employer and employee)and is a legal document.

Offer letter intent to enter into contract and appointment letter is contract as said above;
Either party is free to rescind the offer but appointment letter can not be rescind.

Offer Letter- It is originated by employer to inform employer that a job has been offered to him and he or she may accept or reject the offer in x days etc.
It however is not a confirmation of job from either parties.
Appointment Letter- Post issuance of offer letter and offer acceptance by the employee, the employer originates an appointment letter with terms and conditions of services which an employee has to sign before joining a job.
An employee once accepting the offer by signing the letter,has the obligation to join the job he cannot refuse,if he does so he may have to pay the penalties as metioned in offer letter.
Usually in such cases the penalty is the payment of cost incurred in hiring the candidates with some interest.
However, it depends company to company as to what their hiring policy states.

An offer letter is the recent development .it is another trick or mayajal of corporate.. Audit Department's comfort usable act.Only believe in Standard Appointment letter which is usually like a contract with terms and conditions.

I agree with Gannahope that the offer letter culture is a recent development, maybe rightly for the purposes itemised in his contribution above. So we in the HR fraternity are endorsing the practice of first issuing an offer prior to appointment letter. I want clarity.......can the new employee join the company upon receipt of the offer letter without the appointment letter?
