On one of the WA groups, Administrator of the forum has brought a topic for discussion. Today's topic is on decision on art of story-telling. He has raised the following questions:
Is Story telling an art?
Does story telling help to solve problems of employees?
I have given replies to his questions. My replies are as below:

Q. 1 Is Story telling an art?
Reply: - Of course, story telling is an art. It is an art because while story, story teller needs to have voice modulation and supporting hand movements. Objective story-telling is to influence the other party. Therefore, appropriateness of the story to the situation at hand is also important.
_Let me give example of *Kirtan* that is told in Maharashtra. In the Kirtan, mostly the stories from Ramayana and Mahabharata are told. Many of us know those stories, still _Kirtankar_ hooks us to that place because the method of explanation is marvellous. One does not get bored while listening what is known to him/her._
Q. 2 Does story telling help to solve problems of employees?
Reply: - No. Story-telling is not a problem-solving tool. However, it can be used to advance one’s argument. It can be used in counselling sessions. If time permits then job interviewees may quote an incident to an behaviour question.
Q. 3 Do the examples cited while narrating story create an impact on the minds of employees to transform themselves in their personal as well as Professional life?
Reply: - A story supposed to have only one example and not multiple examples. Yes, story must create an impact on the minds of the persons but _transformation_ of personal or professional life is too big goal. Story-telling helps in shaping the attitude of the persons or inculcate values.
Final Comments: - _As stated earlier, story-telling is an art. But to master this art, one needs to have that kind of reading. Just telling examples or incidents from life is not sufficient. To master the art of story-telling, one needs to mingle with the diverse elements of the society. To elicit other’s experiences, one should talk less and listen more. Secondly, after listening the incident, one should note down, which example is suitable for what purpose. Lastly, management professionals should read business dailies, periodicals etc to enrich their stock of the stories._

Am big fan of you and I never miss to read your post. Your knowledge and experience, they way you write is really awesome and makes me read again.
I admire few other members also in this forum, keep writing all. Meanwhile, I tried my best as below.
Q. 1 Is Story telling an art?
Reply: - Yes, it is. In general, people love to listen stories. The key here is, one has to be well equipped in story telling as it attracts and motivate the listeners/audience. Few leaders in corporate knew the strength of story telling and they use the story telling style while highlighting how the company achieved success in tough times and any key growth in particular domain or business.
The story thus, reaches employees so they knew the right details of the company. The difference is, almost all employees listen to stories so, you cannot see even few employees inactive participation in meetings. If the meetings are lengthy and have just details about company, some employees may sleep also.
Story telling plays a vital role in HR Analytics too, HR shouldn't stop with just gathering reports and publishing it, making stories with strong action plans would reach management.
Q. 2 Does story telling help to solve problems of employees?
Reply: - Through story telling, problems, root cause for the problems and solutions to fix the problem can be made possible. As you listen the stories deeply, it's possible to imagine what's wrong and how to fix it.
Q. 3 Do the examples cited while narrating story create an impact on the minds of employees to transform themselves in their personal as well as Professional life?
Reply: - Every story will have at least a moral that's being conveyed. It's like lot of training materials that you listen or read to upgrade oneself, the key is if you take at least the point that touched you in the story and attempt to apply in your personal or professional life will have huge impact.
Final Comments:
For story telling, know your content and audience and their diversity (age, gender, generation and so on) do homework on what you want to convey in a better way provided the key skill of strong communication is already in place.

Dear All:
Ever watched speakers / presenters on Ted Talks!
9/10 of these talks come in the shape of stories. What makes story-telling compelling, is the chiseling for a better appreciation of the goal / message of the talk in that the 'story' touches our subliminal and sub-conscious levels intricately interwoven with our conscious level of acceptance / rejection of the message. The NVC cues also add to heighten the interest / marketability of the idea / thought / message.
Do they help solve problems? as one contributor asked. Involving oneself in another's problem, and then responding in a fairy-like tale with passion, compassion, creating a majestic aura of the exchange environment, do help solve problems socially and professionally.
