Dear Amit,
Bombay High Court has ruled that "Probation Period Can't Be Enhanced Beyond Six Months As Stipulated By Model Standing Orders."
*Bom. HC 209 ( Judgment in Feb-2016)*
I do not have complete judgement but you may do Google search to get it.
Thanks,

According to my knowledge,
1. From the date of joining probation period should 03-06 months in a particular manner.
2. Later on if evaluation needs more improvements then may extended up to more 03 months.
3. If individual could not show performance in a standard mark then management can sack due to consistent poor performance.

Generally when any offer is given, there is a mentioning of probation period which varies between 3 and 6 months with a purpose to assess the new appointee. In the event of the performance not found satisfactory, the probation could be extended by another 3 to 6 months and the total period of 9 or 12 months(probation) is a quite reasonable period to assess the performance of the probationer.

In continuation of the replies of our learned friends, I like to add that if the very concept of probation is understood properly, the necessity for extending a new entrant's probation is a matter of limited choice and as such the question relating to the probable number of extension of probation becomes automatically infructuous. Probation is the situation or the definite period of time during which a new employee's suitability to his job and the work culture of the organization is assessed objectively. If the incumbent is a fresher and the job for which he has been selected is highly technical or professional involving intensive training either pre-appointment or on- the- job, probation can be extended only once depending on the nature of short-fall noticed in his performance subject to the service conditions or Standing Orders of the establishment. However, in my opinion, the extension can not be more than the period of probation whether it is three months or six months as already fixed. In other words, after the expiry of the period of probation, the probationer can not be kept as such under the pretext of extension after extension which will tantamount to bad HR practice or Unfair Labour practice.
