Dear Sankaracharya,

You have joined the hotel industry newly. What is your designation? Why you are required to do a SWOT Analysis? Who has told you to do that? If you have 2,000+ employees then yours is a very big group. How many properties do you have? At how many locations do you have?

SWOT Analysis is a powerful tool that is used for formulating and planning business strategy. It is a tool for organisational scanning. Business strategy is developed at the top level of management. Are you part of the top-level management?

To do the SWOT Analysis, a detailed questionnaire is necessary. While you may get articles on SWOT Analysis on Google, however, mere reading articles is not sufficient. What you require is a detailed questionnaire. It is not that easy to develop the questionnaire. It requires immense expertise. I provide training and consulting services on business strategy. As a part of this training, I help companies in developing a strategic plan. To develop a strategic plan, one of the tools that are used is SWOT Analysis. You may click here to know more about my training on "Strategic Analysis of the Enterprise".

In fact after conducting training a couple of times, I have found limitations of the SWOT Analysis and hence stopped using this tool. There are few better tools than SWOT Analysis. If you wish to avail of my consulting services then feel free to approach me.

SWOT Analysis

In addition to what Sh Divekar has mentioned, I would say that SWOT analysis (Strength, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) is like knowing what is it, where is it, what is it lacking, why is it lacking and where and how it should go. Basically to know about the existing health of an organization. Means where the degree of unintended deviation from the targeted matrix has taken the organization. It involves knowledge of particular area, time, info, data, resources, support, will and acceptance. I used to follow one practice of asking the guys leaving the organization (after final HOTO) to do this analysis. Experience says, many organizations give a go ahead for this exercise but subsequently either the effort gets stalled due to lack of support, fear of disclosure of shortcoming/ failures or sheer unwillingness to implement the recommendation. Many a times. SWOT analysis carried out in a very professional manner, remain in the files due to lack of fear, resistant to change or just the unwillingness. the SWOT analysis must be done by professional with total commitment to its implementation.

True. There is a plenty to surf and learn on all such sites.
At the same time, one should not be focussing on charging every time as this is a very often discussed subject.
My personal views Please ignore if they hurt anyone.
