Let me share my thoughts inline with your posting.
Have you ever thought of industrial hygiene as a serious issue and forms part of industrial safety - Done few assessment along with team for MNCs. In India I have seen very less importance giving by companies to Industrial Hygiene. Now in India also this start getting thoughts as many organizations (Especially into pharmaceutical and F&B) are trying for international collaborations and they frequently getting customer audits. Example PSCI audits. This requires a lot to do by pharmaceutical companies on fulfilling the industrial hygiene requirement and hence they even deploying industrial hygienist.
How many industries have employed industrial hygienists so far? - May be 2 to 3 %. Not more than that even after this much market compulsion is there. They try to manage somehow in most of the cases.
Do safety officers have exposure to industrial hygiene practices? - Generally no. Most of them who knows basics attend one or two day awareness courses and become master themselves into the field.
In the absence of a hygienist what safety officers can do about industrial hygiene? - May be they can do checklist based audits. With the help of external agencies get Industrial Hygiene Assessments and get the recommendations implemented. Nothing much, I feel like the Safety person can do about IH.
Issues are lot.. I have seen employees of chemical company taking tea breaks in between their work by standing in the corner of shop floor. Not even washing hands. There are a lot of issues, which until become big or turns into an accident, organizations knowingly or unknowingly closing eyes.
