Minimum wages refers to the lowest wages that should be paid to employees without which a company has no right to exist or do business. Minimum Wages is regulated through Minimum Wages Act. The state governments have been given power to notify minimum wages applicable to different industries in the respective states. Accordingly, different states have notified different scheduled employments and have fixed minimum wages applicable to different categories of employees in the scheduled employments. The number of scheduled employment may vary from state to state. Similarly, the minimum wages applicable to same industry for different states may also vary. Therefore, you have to refer to the state notification of minimum wages with reference to the industry concerned so as to know what exactly are the bare minimum wages that you should pay to different categories of employees.

Minimum Wages is not just applicable to workers, but the notification is expected to specify the wages to be paid to supervisors and even managers. Since these are the minimum wages, there is nothing illegal in paying higher wages to any employee. Also, if any employee is getting a higher wages than what is notified by the Govt, he is expected to get protection of the existing higher salary.
