I am working as a teacher in a minority-run educational institution since the past two-and-a-half years. I got into the family way and informed my employer about it. My due date is in mid-Jan. In the month of October this year I was supposed to receive my confirmation letter but my probation period has been further extended. My employer informed me that as per minority and school rules, the employees on probation are not eligible for maternity leave with pay. They asked me apply for "long leave due to personal reasons" which is without pay. I wanted to know whether I am eligible for the maternity benefits as per the Maternity Benefit Act of 1961?
