Dear Ankit,
This is a fertile area to learn. First build rapport with workmen by being proactive in interactions both official and personal if the workmen want.
2. Be responsive. If a workmen says has problem getting PF loan don't just refer. Go to the department concerned first learn yourself the procedure and explain to workmen. But very quickly.
3. Keep your eyes ears open and if apprehensive of discontent by workmen sound the bosses as you are too new to handle it.
4.Ensure all company welfare measures reach them and they know what they can expect.
5. Also be firm wherever needed but politely.
If you are responsive and proactive even if you do not solve all issues (none does) they would respect you.
All the best.

Dear Mr.Ankit,

You are written as Administration executive and also looking for Industrial Relations matter. What is your qualification, whether you got the degree in Personnel Management and Industrial relations. If so your worry will be less and need not think much. Mr. Saikumar has given you the excellent back ground where you need to devote your duties and responsibilities. Besides this you should also go through with Industrial Disputes Act. Read the labour journals on case to case study, specially in procedures of Domestic enquiry and findings of the proceedings. But all these are theoretical knowledge but you will achieve actual knowledge when you practically face. One thing as a IR you should be polite and be as a mediator between the employer and employee. You should think at both sides and not one way. Employees should not harmed or deprived with any benefits and employer also should not be sustained loss on production and profit point of view. Your main target is to comply with the statutory requirement and maintenance of related records and returns etc as applicable. As there is no end to learn the things as this HR and IR is a vast area and show interest in your job and learning the things are no end.

Wish you all the best.

Dear Ankit,
IR means redressal of problems of the workmen, meeting demands of the Unions pertaining to problems individual/ collective pertaining to policy of the management in relation of pay and perks of the workmen in particular and any other demands in general.
Here, what you have to do is to have a smooth relationship with the workmen in particular and the union in general striking a reasonable balance with the management.
In this context I would suggest you to have a good knowledge of the labour laws particularly the Industrial Disputes Act, factories Act, Payment of wages Act, Workmens Compensation act etc.
What is expected of you is to be sensitive, sensible, quick and pro-active and not to have prejudices against any one. I feel that the qualities preceding will help you to handle the IR portfolio satisfactorily.

Dear Ankit,
Every one of us has faced this type of similar situation like you. You have all the knowledge, however, you need only the ideas. Just be good to your employees and treat them as your friend but it does not mean that they will take advantages. Ask them about their issues and worries and try to solve the problems as soon as possible under the boundaries of your company's policy, rules & regulations. Go through the laws relating to the Industrial Disputes Act, Factories Act, Payment of wages Act, Workmen's Compensation Act etc.
With Regards,
