Dear Friends – we are a startup IT organization and we have an employee who is having personal life issues. Because of that he is having thoughts of committing suicide. We repeatedly asked him whether it is work related and he denied it. He is saying it is purely because of personal life issues. Given the situation we have decided to do following:
1. Encourage him to get professional help.
2. We let him work from home as much as he needs.
3. We let him work remotely (from his parents or in-law’s place outside of the city where our office exist)
The above items are documented in emails.
Is there we need to do apart from above items to protect ourselves if something goes wrong in future. Of course, the first objective is not to have any unfortunate event. What is that as company we could do to prevent any unfortunate event since it is purely due to personal life issues?

Dear Amar,
You have almost done everything right operationally. However, request you to get an appointment with a psychiatrist at your earliest.
Please don't leave it to him . More importantly, keep an aide around him. He wouldn't want to be watched. Hence a trust worthy companion who helps in open up is a must.
Family support is good, if only he opens up to them.
The best past is , he has already expressed his intentions . Hence we can save him. Mostly, such people keep everything secret till they act on it.
We managed one case with an ex-employer. Our employee didn't share anything , but thankfully we triggered help, within a hour , those pills were taken. It required a pre-mamoth's effort in building trust. In due course, everything went back to normal again!
Create a nurturing environment and watch him grow. Wish you all the best!

About Dr Chandrasekhar: - He runs counselling centre in very organised manner. Counsellors are trained, given probation and then put on job of counselling. Since this is social service, counsellors do not take any charges. Dr Chadrasekhar has done yeoman's job in settling familial or social conflict in the society. Not many in society provide this type of selfless service.

I have a few issues to share with you.
First of all honestly ask yourself and your colleagues to rule out any possibility of work related issues which are primary causes (could be) of his present predicament/state of mind.
Do you really think allowing him to work from home would relieve him of this phobia/menace in him. What if he aggravate this ill feeling and go to extreme what you feared. I strongly feel a whole some psychiatric diagnose associated with suitable therapy could cure him. Side by side someone close to him should try to ascertain what could be the reason(s) resulting in his present state of mind.

The positive suggestions of (Cite Contribution) and Kumar and the quick response of Dinesh for counselling are appreciable.I also concur with Kumar that permitting the employee to work from at home may not be good.I don't know what Psychology speaks about suicide. But, In my personal view, suicide is not a sudden decision taken by a depressed person at the spurt of a moment.It is that strong tendency to destroy something detestable holed up in the sub-conscious for long and emerges out as self-destruction or suicide. One of the factors triggering the tendency to suicide is loneliness. I think all your proactive & preemptive acts inclusive of the suggestions offered are more than suffice. An employer can not do the policing round the clock over an employee with an estranged personal life.
