The plan to link Employees Provident Fund (EPFO) benefits with the Aadhaar card has been dumped. With a pilot project underway in 43 districts to give direct cash transfer of subsidies through the Aadhaar card, EPF and pension were included in the scheme at the end of last year.

However, there were concerns over the need to include EPF into the Aadhaar plan, as it was an independent scheme altogether. A couple of days ago, EPFO finally issued instructions that its schemes have been excluded from the direct cash transfer plan.

In the absence of an Aadhaar card, any other ID proof considered valid to apply for an Aadhaar card had to be submitted. This was to allow the scheme's benefits to be mandatorily linked through the card.

The money is currently transferred through national electronic fund transfer (NEFT) or cheques are issued. EPFO officials were wary since beginning about the linking with Aadhaar. This was also because of the complications that would arise as EPFO tried to ensure that each new employee had an Aadhaar number.
