hi all i am vidula & in need of the articles on quality work life balace. can u help me?

Hi Vidula,

Unhappy, stressed human resources can't stay effective. Rising

competition and hectic lifestyles are taking their toll and employee

wellness is at stake. In US alone, according to a very conservative

estimate, stress costs well over $ 75 billion worth of productivity

every year through stress-induced ailments, as sick-leave and medical bills ; the loss due to reduced focus is not included and is hard to estimate.

While engrossed in work at home or in office, if we can be anchored in an inner calmness, it greatly helps. This needs developing and

training Self-awareness.

Stay self-aware : Some of the tell-tale signs of a rising stress level, are : Local tensing of muscles, shallow and rapid breathing with some rise in pulse rate, decrease in focus, reduction in happiness level etc. Whenever these happen, we can do some of the things that follow.

Take a break for 5 - 10 mins : This is investing time to eventually save time, because you will come back to work smarter, with more focus.

Take deep breaths (abdominally i.e. diaphragmatically) , stretch up, have a glass of water, or little fruit-juice or hot soup (avoid too much tea / coffee), tense all body muscles in a wave and then relax, etc.

Exercise everyday : Exercise before coming to office either intensely (i.e.much sweating) for 20 minutes, moderately (light sweating) for 30 mins, or gently (series of light stretches) for 40 mins. For people who have not had regular workouts, moderately is the best ; for those who choose to exercise gently everyday, moderate to intense workout twice a week are desirable, but while we can customize, regularity is always the key. Did you say you have no time ? It's like driving hard on a highway and say you have no time to take fuel !!

Enjoy your work : Change the way you look at work. Bring your whole heart to it. To work only for salary is a kind of slavery to matter, we must also work for joy and smiling and do your best but don't keep worrying about the results. with creativity. While working, be sincere, but not serious. Keep smiling.

Manage your time well and prioritize : When with spouse/ kids/parents, give your whole attention to them and while working in office, be focused on work, but have no resistance if you have to switch roles suddenly, say because of a phone-call. This living in 'now', and acceptance-driven gliding between roles, will create a dynamic work-life balance. Mis-management of time/the related work-life imbalance, and stress, feed on each other.

Eat mindfully : We become not only what we think, but also what we eat, so let us choose both carefully. Choosing thoughts takes a long practice ; choosing foods also needs some mastery over habits hard-wired into our brains and the slavery to taste-buds, but with a healthy self-love and care, it is do-able. Never skip your breakfast. Make your last meal of the day two hours before sleep. Eat fresh fruits, seasonal greens, sprouts, almonds, etc. Don't drink too much water with/immediately after the meals, but any amount an hour later. Drink plenty of water the first thing in the morning.

Tame your Ego : We all have ego, it is our body-identified lower self-awareness. One can never be completely free from awareness of the self, but it can evolve from the small ' I ' which limits our consciousness to 'me' and 'mine', to the big ' I ' which includes all. Taming ego smoothens relationships. We don't need any self-mortification here, no need to give up our assertiveness - we don't have to become a door-mat or a vegetable, but we just need to respect others as we respect ourselves, and appreciate their point of view. Our behavior reflects our attitude ; our attitude reflects in turn the centering of our consciousness or our basic values.

Learn & Practice Yoga : Some Pranayama (Yogic breathing techniques to manage and balance the Prana or life force) followed by Meditation, will effectively manage stress like nothing else. Pray before and after meditation, and pray for others also.

Hope these gives some pointers..

Cheers,

Rajat Joshi

Members,

Work Life Balance has become a very hot topic in IT / ITES companies. It has always been a topic which the Essential services were trying to address in their work force. Now, IT / ITES are essential services to their clients and customers.

Its a organisational requirement that we are ready to address stress level issues and bring it down to a managable levels. Now, you have stress busters in the form of various small toys that are available in the market to utilise. Its good that when we buy these toys, we actually increase the sales / revenues for these companies however, from the HR front are we prepared to address this issue and how? Since these stress busters are increasing on the work places and are kept in a very visible places on the work desk. What does this indicate?

These are signals HR has take as informal messages from the system and work towards providing medicines. Following are some of the measures:

1. Encourge your teams to deliver the task by providing time by which they need to close tasks. Do not look at when they come and when they go from office. That's upto them. End of the day look at their performance linked to quality of the delivery that they have delivered. Things needs to change at home first before you can look at others.

2. Encourage them to go home if they do not have much to do in office. Inter team members contribution is upto them to decide.

3. On Monday, spend at least checking with them how was thier weekend? This may give you feedback on how many of them came to office and need analysis can be done.

4. Team members who are not married, typically find themselves in office during weekends. Encourage them to read. If you can provide them with some books nothing like it.

5. Provide that's happeing in the city over the weekend. Movies that are going on currently in town etc...

6. Task force for transformation is starting point to look at instance to change in the organisations. People who will be able to easily penetrate and change, should be identified as catalysts. Give them the space to work and come back to you with workable ideas.

7. Look at flexible work hours at work place

8. Headcount ratio in teams need to be analysed

9. Identify the pessimitic charters in each team and change their outlook. Make them to work in these forms

10. Commitment from the Senior Leadership team is a must if are looking for a better work life balance in your organisation.

Hope you guys liked my ideas !

Let me know.

Regards

Ranga :)
