I work as a HR in an organization from 8 months. I work 6 days a week and I also come to work on Sun if I have work. I have got an opportunity to work for an NGO as a volunteer every Sat. As I would not have any work to do so I discussed with my Boss if i can take Sat & Sun weekly off, but they are not willing to give me sat & sun off. Is there any other way I can make them understand about the situation.

Regret to say that it is purely a personal issue. But if the working time of the company is six days a week, then you are expected to follow it. Being an HR person you should not ask for exception also. Your working for any NGO or for charity without any interest of profit or income is irrelevant here. What matters is rules of the company. If you really need off on Saturdays as well, you will have to find alternative jobs.

There are other people in the organization who are not working sat & sun. So being a HR person do you mean to say that I shouldn’t take up any kind of social responsibility ?

I think Kritika has taken my reply wrongly. First of all in your first post (to which only I replied) you did not mention that 'there are others who do not work on Saturday'. If the practice of the organisation itself is that different positions or categories of employees have different off days and due to that some people enjoy benefits much more than others by way of off and leaves, then I have nothing to say. I do hereby withdraw my statements because I have given it in an organisational frame work only. In an organisation such things should not happen and if the organisation work for 6 days all are expected to work for 6 days. On the other hand, if whims and fancy rules, you can also try your luck. That's all.

And again, an HR person is different from all others. He is expected to be a role model for all others. You have 8 months of experience in HR, but I am speaking from my own experience which is 30+ years!! During this long tenure I have seen different types of people or I should say different emotions and the employee bondage or relation is built on the base of HR department only. If HR is weak the entire structure of the organisation will fall.

I second Madhu, first try to take professional responsibility rather than social responsibility for which one is hired for. If a HR personnel is interested in Social Responsibility more than his/her professional responsibility, what will the other employees lead the company to is a big question mark
