Dear Esteemed Seniors
I need suggestions and ideas on how t0 be an effective HR manager, as I have recntly joined a new organization, what I could do to make a difference, n make HR important department, as here the HR is not that strong. I want to take initiatives to let HR department have and gain its worth in the eye of employee and the employer. Please suggest ideas.
I have tried to regulate the daily attendance, leave management, business attire, and currently working on the revision of salary because it hasn't been revised from long.
what else i could do? please give me ideas and suggestions

Dear Xunaira,

I appreciate your zeal towards making changes and wanting to learn about HR.

Here are a few idea, which might require a bit of effort but once it is done, it will bring about positive changes:-

1) Think about training programs such as team building, leadership for all departments since they bring people from all departments under one roof.

2) You could look at all standing orders and HR policies and probably get an outsider's view on it. A lot of changes could be brought about it them if you need.

3) If you want people to notice you / HR Dept, you need to make it work and in any business the most important word in "money". Make it a point to be a part of budgets and finance meetings and give your opinion. Human resource also has a say in budgets and you need to take stands if situation arises.

4) Try to look at the statutory compliance for your company - whether all acts and laws are abide by or not. Labour Laws are particularly creating a lot of problems for employers today.

There could be a lot more things you could look at. However, these are just some ideas that came to me.

Dear Xunaira,

If you want to create a strong HR department, forget all theories that had been taught in your MBA class. Instead, get passionate about people and earn their respect first thing by being truly concerned about them. Once you have earned that, slowly try to help develop their skills and address their professional needs. You must keep your management in the loop with this approach or else they will think you are a bad hire. It will take you a year approximately to get things in place. The Govt. of India has lots of people-friendly policies which you can perhaps look at. Your job must be to make employees more productive and happy at work. That way you will be busy creating a strong HR dep't. However, please remember that your own salary increments may not be good all the while. The management will be immune to what you do if they see that things are going on smoothly. Moreover the company survived without an HR dep't or you, all the while.

Thank you very much for the ideas, these are very strong ideas to work with. I have started working on developing the SOP of HR because previously there were none to refer anything to, and I hope by developing these I will be able to develop HR manual which would work for coming time and provide benchmark for the evaluations. Any sample SOPs would be very helpful and welcomed. :)

One problem I am facing is that the employer is not interested in the welfare of the employees, it takes the employees as fore-granted which is eliminating the morale and motivation of the employees, I have tried to convince the employer how important motivated employees are but they are putting an ear on it, meanwhile I think they will take me as more people oriented person as compared to the last HR person here at the company who was always trying to please the employer with depriving the employees from their legal and rightful rights.

suggestions on how to deal with this issue.

Dear Xunaira,

Developing SOP's is a very good step. This will reduce a lot of conflicts and confusion. You must have seen people intruding in your domain, SOP's will solve this problem. I am also working in an organization where there's no concept of SOP's. However, I am trying to get some help on that as well.

Secondly, the problem you are facing is really very important for employees and their motivation. If you are not having any employee welfare programs and policies, employees are likely to switch to any other company, You see everywhere they will get the money (pay), but the plus point is the benefits, the welfare programs for the employees.

Suggestion:

For that you can explain to your management that insurance programs are very important not only for the employees but also for them. If they face any accident or any sickness they definitely need health care. And Health insurance is the best and economic solution for that. Plus the employees will be more productive and motivated. If the employees are not getting any insurance from the company, they will have more excuses of illness and etc.

You can also give them some examples of other leading organizations, who are offering more employee welfare programs and policies.
