Dear Friends
Well this is slightly different request.
I have number of formats of Exit interviews and i use them too. But this time the person who is leaving is one of the oldest employee who knows most of the thing of the organization. (She is leaving as her husband is shifted to bangalore)
In fact i am too young as compare to her in the company so i dont find the right things that i can ask her in exit interview. The set pattern questions looks very cliche when i think of her.
So anybody out there who can suggest me something very different so she will feel like speaking at the time of interview.!!!!!!!!!

Hi Nishtha,

There are two points in response to your query here.

1. Exit interviews are one of the most difficult parts of HR. And its natural for you to feel intimidated in the given circumstances. But then, remember that its a job that needs to be done. Don't let the intimidating circumstances get to you. Try and keep the exit interview as light as possible.

2. The exit interview is important because it is supposed to give a first hand account from an employee leaving the organisation as to his/her experiences in it. It also helps the management (especially HR) to evaluate if there are any structural, functional or policy shortcomings that might be causing attrition. Since the employee you've mentioned is an old-timer, she would be in a good position to give you a better insight into the same. Moreover, since her primary reason for leaving is known and isn't negative, you can use the exit interview to find out about how she feels in general about her tenure with the organisation.

addon:
hold the exit interview least 2-3 months after the employee has left and pref by a third party organsiation...
most cos make the mistake of holding exit interview and making counter offers at the same time...
after 2-3 months, there would be no frayed emotions, the ex employee would have been comfortably settled in the new job and would look at his prev cos with neutral approach.
the sole target of exit interview is Learning
use the findings to initiate changes in policy/ structure/ systems/ wrong managerial talent/ etc
