Dear Abhishek,
The best HR practice is to accompany salespersons in their sales call. Spend one day per fortnight or month along with salesperson. Each time you should go with different salesperson. Record your observations. These records will be helpful in your future recruitment also.
The No 1 challenge for sales department is to have well defined sales process. Every single salesperson should follow same process irrespective of location. This is quite challenging but once you do it, you will reap benefits forever. Nothing more than standard sales process motivates the sales persons.

I have given replies to your query in my first post itself. By the way what is your product or service? How many salespersons you have and what is their education level? What market study you have done? What kind of training you have given to your salespersons? How salespersons share their experience of their sales calls among themselves?
I recommend you talking to sales head and designing standardised sales process. This should be your first priority. At the same time, your sales head should not feel that you are too intrusive in his territory but you need to tell him that standardisation of systems and processes is major OD intervention and standarisation of sales process is no exception.
Training of salespersons will come later.
