there is no hardcore guidelines for it yet, as far me concern, even we have submitted hard copy of RC, though we are remitted our monthly dues by online method.
in my view you should consult your local esic branch.

Dear All,
It is not necessary to Submit the Half yearly return to ESIC, because we are updating our data on monthly basis and the same is replicated in ESIC server. So in other words we are totally updated by fractions of minutes in ESIC server.

Hello All,
Recently we have ESI audit in our company in Ahmedabad, ESIC auditor has told that after filling ESI online no need for half yearly returns, these information may help you.
Thanking you,

Dear All,
Until the concerned Regulation changes, you can not come to a conclusion of cancellation of submission of Half Yearly Returns....
After the computerisation of the esic.....the following suggestions i can give:
i. As of now submission of RC at Branch Offices is not required but you should ensure submission of Self certification on online by using "SELF CERTIFIATION" link in the esic employer's homepage;
ii. Most of the employers are ignoring the main provision of submission of Annual Returns, i.e. Form-01(A) which is supposed to submit every year 31st January........failing which prosecution action can be initiated........so its better to submit Annual return also by using the link of "ANNUAL INFORMATION RETURN" available in the esic employer's home page.....
All the best with regards,
