Hi...
I think compare to other functional area HR has more growth.
But...
firstly, u have to see that are you really interested in HR, just looking after recent trend you do not have to follow that.
About the role of HR in organisation than i must say whatever you have till study about HR and will study, all the things included in HR job might be its not possible completely in any other specialization.
Role include: recruitment, staffing, induction, orientation, administration, performance appraisal, training, retention, retirement and so on...
And about the necessity that you already know by seeing the various functions.
All the best for your future... Make a wise decision and the decision which you LIKE.

First let me introduce myself, I'm shafi, worked as HR executive & working as SAP HR trainer.
Dear Prasad, I don't want to involve in the discussion of your interest on HR, but I'll tell you what are the activities of the HR in an organization. Actually the HR activities from coordinating with all the project teams of the org'n. Because you have to fulfill the man power requirement of the Org'n. Now you have to set the different perimeters like calling the skilled candidates for interview & facilitating & conducting the interviews, followup, salary negotiation, joining formalities, induction, training, establishing the performance standards, appraisals, grievances, statuary compliances like PF ESI etc. exit interviews, reveling formalities. All the above activities comes under HR activities. If I it put in simple way "all the activities form recruiting a person to till he leaves the organization".
