I'm a new joinee in HR as an officer. I'm a bit shy and introvertish by nature. How can I work on this and improve my social skills? I would like to increase my social network and collaborate with my colleagues. Please help me.

It is good that you are aware of your problem and the primary reason for that. To develop your interpersonal skills I suggest the following

- Use every opportunity to do something for those around you. This will give you the opportunity to find favor with them and it will also open the doors for you to interact with them.

- Share things that you can, which might be of the other person’s interest. E.g. If you come across a useful PPT or forward on Sales/ Finance share it with people in those departments who show an interest in such stuff.

-If you are shy because you feel your communications skills are not good enough then undergo a training related to that maybe a Personality Development program

-Dress smartly, be aware of the manners and etiquettes and use the magic words please, sorry and thank you as and when required.

-Do not take criticism personally. If you get criticized ask yourself if there is some truth in it. Learn from the feedback and improve. Do not get upset, angry or fearful because you made a mistake or you are unfairly criticized.

-Make an effort to meet more people, both within the organization and in the social environment you live in. This will help you open up and become more confident day by day.

thank you sir for the suggestions...but I was asking about relation with other offices such as Police, Electricity, Labour dept., P.F. office, ESIC , Food Corporation of India etc.
We can't just appear there and put forward our hand and say "Hello, I'm form XYZ Company" may be they will not recognise me and I'll be the subject of laughter.......

First of apologies for misunderstanding your original query. Fortunately you have given more inputs and put the problem in perspective. You have also in the second sentence of your clarification post, expressed your own inhibitions which clearly reinforce the fact that you need to focus on your interpersonal skills.

By and large human beings behave the same irrespective of what settings they are in. True that there might be less finesse, more tardiness and definitely a lot of lethargy in the behaviour and response of the bureaucratic functionaries as compared to the reactions of the private sector. However I am sure they too will not be out rightly curt, brusque and unresponsive as you apparently seem to believe or visualise. You would need to change your mindset and stop worrying about being the laughing stock. Unless you overcome this mental block, you will always approach people with the feeling of failure and unfortunately most times you will end up not getting your way thereby reinforcing your belief and losing your confidence.

Treat government officials with respect and dignity and human nature being what it is they will respond in like manner. If however you go with the preconceived notion that they will not be responsive to your needs, you will convey that through your body language, your tone and choice of words and I am afraid you will be frustrated, irritated and ineffective.

My original suggestions still hold good for any setting but will work better once you start believing that you can be effective in your role and successfully liaison with anyone.
