Dear Friends,

In our factory, we do carry out a grinding operation with the help of Portable Hand Grinders. We all know that, “We should never use the Grinder without the guard”.
However, some times our operators remove the guards saying that while grinding the jobs which are having notches this guard prevents the approach of Grinder.

Till date this practice has not caused any injury.

Now, as a Safety Professional, I always have a concern about this unsafe practice.
We have given lot of thoughts on this. However, we could not arrive at a practical solution on this.

I urge upon all of you to help in this regard.

Dear Shashikant,

I can’t believe this as a safety man how you allow your worker to do unsafe job. Yes it’s equal to put your worker on IDLH.

You should explain to your employees, what are the direct and indirect causes of machine guarding. They are not educated that’s why our company appointment us to educate our employees this is our job.

Direct cause:

Loss his finger it never grow again.

Loss his job, he can’t work without finger.

Company accident rate increase,

Indirect cause:

Its reflects on employee family

Its affects the employee’s children studies/future.

Insurance, compensation etc..,,

I add only few points of D & ID causes.

Note it’s for you Mr.Shashikant:

If accidents happened one day production will loss for our company.

Transportation charge (Vehicle charge/operator charge)

Medical charge

Insurance

Investigation time (In this time you will do something for company)

Our Hr time will be waste (He work for employee insurance, ESI etc..,,)

Mr.Shashikant just think it’s indirectly affects your company economy it’s all controlled by 30 minutes training you will educate your employee within 30 minutes.

Just think if 3 to 4 employees injure by inadequate machine guarding in one week THINK what going to happen????? . . .

Dear Raghu
What Mr. Shashikant says is a practical problem... You may be not facing the same in your plant... So I think your reply is a not a solution to his concern...
I also sometimes facing this problem... The workers and the engineers itself having explanations and reasons to justify what they doing... Sometimes for doing grinding in odd locations they telling that the grinder guard obstructing... In practical it's fact also... I bond to allow the grinderman to do the job without wheel guard in place... Situation demands it... Advice him to take extra precautions...That's it...
What is the alternative arragement we as a Safety Pro to suggest them??? Please come forward with your valuable advice's...
@Shashikant
Thanks for come forward with this query...

Dear dipil,

I am disagree with your comment. Mr.dipil then why we created the rule?

Everyproblem/Query have soluction in the world. Everyone have reasons/explanation try to prove themself right.

Example:

Last week in our project someguys/erectors, erecting the scaffold almost 98% complete

(i am not signed on TAG its under progress) one of our GDA visited our site he knew very well about me (i had work with him in previous project) just he asked Raghu see that scaffold bearer (scaffolding tied with steel column of building) its little bend within a second i replaied to him our building steel column is not stright scaffolding in PLUMB (Finally it has been fixed). Everybudy have explanations/reasons.

I have some Ideas:

Suggestion box;;;;

Write the problem/query post on DFAC (dining facilities) with suggestion box announce some good prizes/awards for best 3 suggestion then you will see with in a week you will get perfect soluction. (Management should support to you on this case)

(Even the workers and the engineers themselfself give some suggestions )

Mr.Dipil just think one minute if he loss his finger THATS IT "Follow/Obey the rule whatever it is NO Excuse".

Rule created for US..

Waiting for your reply Mr.dipil!!!!!!!!

Dear Seniors ,

I am waiting for your commands on this thread. Educate me if i am wrong.

Dear Raghu

I am agreeing with your comments... Every problem having solution and we try to pull out the best solution for few practical problems through this forum... We do have a suggestion scheme existing in our plant with a token gift of 500 Rs. against implemented suggestions and 100 Rs for each receiving suggestions...

I think there might be small dia grinders and wheels available in markets which may solve the purpose of grinding in odd positions with wheel on... Let me try with M/s. Bosch and if getting any solution from them will share the same here with the forum...

Raghu mainly the thing is I not gone that much deeply into this topic... Cause this happening in once in a while or you can say 1 or 2 %... Still as you said in this 2 % anything can happen... As being a Safety Professional we should stop anything which is unsafe... But before doing so we should be having enough back up of why and what's the best way to do the job safely...

Hope you understand what i mean to convey...

Lets try to come to a common conclusion...

Dear Mr. Raghu & Mr. Dipil,

Thanks a lot for sharing your view in on this topic.

Dear Mr. Raghu,

It’s not the case at all that our operators don’t want the guard in place. Most of the operators are Diploma Engineers. They are very much aware of the Safety Rules & the Consequences of not following the safety rules, as we regularly educate & train them.

Again time and money is not an issue. We spend lot of time in training & discussing the safety matters. Even the top management supports a lot.

We do have a suggestion scheme but in this issue it has not helped. We have done a lot of brain storming on this topic. However, we could not arrive at a practical solution.

We have to carry out this operation once in a week for 15 minutes but as rightly said by both of you ‘anything can happen during this period’. Hence we are searching for a practical solution.

Dear Mr. Dipil, we have tried pencil grinder also. However, it has not served the purpose 100%.

Dear Mr. Raghu, rightly said by you – Every Problem Has a Solution. But Everybody Can Not Have the Solution for Everything. As a Safety professional you have to suggest practical solutions to your employees.

And that is why I have started this thread.

Thanks once again for participation.

Let’s hope for active participation from other members also.
