i joined in civil services as hr generalist but i m feeling there is no much scope in this organisation. there payroll is managed by accounts dept. and i have to manage attendence and sum petty registers, recruitment and joining formalities but the thing is there is no much recruitment . i thnk most of the time i vil be idel wt 2 do. pls reply

I know this will sound unpleasant or critical, but pl note that THIS IS YOUR LIFE & IT'S YOU WHO HAVE TO TAKE THE FINAL DECISIONS.

Just because the members of this Forum gave their suggestions in GOOD FAITH, that doesn't mean that you have to accept them without applying your mind. What if ALL THE MEMBERS of this Forum--for whatever reason--asked you to jump in a well, would you do it? I bet--NO. Why?

The understanding of all the seniors/members who take time to give suggestions & share their experiences, so that those who have just entered their careers will benefit & avoid the same mistakes which they did is this: they are only giving INPUTS to the persons who ask for advice. It's for the individual concerned to evaluate the inputs vis-a-vis the situation [both personal & official] he/she is into AND THEN take the Final call.

The main point that you seem to be missing out is this: No two situations are identical--maybe similar, but NEVER IDENTICAL. So whatever others tell you would definitely have to be weighed-in with your own views, experiences, aspirations & goals before the Final call is taken.

saw ur comment & felt bad. i realised also dat u r getting demoralised by doing all petty works but let me tell u dat hr work isnt confined only to payroll / generalist. love what ever YOU ARE doing & also try exploring new new things like employee engagement, staff skill enhancement program or anything to make your presence visible in the organization. good luck chap.

Its really sad if you feel that the advice given to you wasn't appropriate. I'm a part of Citeman Network since last 5 years and i haven't read this kind of mail ever before.
There were more than 15 people who gave you their valuable time and suggestions now this subject title of your thread will surely gonna hurt them.
Problems can come anywhere, but at least be a man to decide and make your own destiny, don't blame others. Rest I think everything else is said by Tajsateesh, i second all his words.
Now, with your problem, try and be innovative, Generalist HR profile is much more than just salary/payroll and recruitment.
Be clear of your role and engage in some more HR functions, like training, design a new Performance Management system or if a PMS is already there work around it to make it work properly.
Hope you won't repeat this again.

In adition to what Satheesh and Archana have mentioned , here's my suggestion for your consideration. Incase you have accepted a generalist role, no matter how narrow scope you find right now, its far beyond what you see. If you are in job which do not provide you an opportunity for learning, please do consider these suggestions:
  • Identify the different areas . No matter how entangled they are segragate the workflows. Suppose , recruitment and induction are combined with New hire integration as a single function. There can be several reasons to such a design, may be low manpower or lesser hiring . Understand these reasons , map the work flow.
  • When you start with this basic excercise, keep taking a re-look at the existing process and to what is being followed in the industry. Draw your own comparative charts and identify the areas for improvements.
  • It might be that you are not allowed to implement or even remotely suggest what you may find applicable. But remember this is your learning process. Irrespective of the fact , whether you get to implement it or not , you would get an immense amount of learning as you do this exercise.
  • Identify different practices and start learning more on them. Such as recruitment may be done differently in your organization. Identify why is it so. Go beyond your role and learn more about the work , the business model and the competencies required in the talent who would deliver that job. Document this learning and identify how you can suggest better utilization of talent through creating a funnel.
  • If you still dont find any such scope, take up any area of your interest in HR and start learning more on it. You may select training and development or compensation. Read what is available about them in this community, frame your questions and connect with members to know more.
  • Check your understanding in terms of forming Policies and the statutory standards.
  • Please remember your learning is not limited to the current role but far beyond it. Target your self to excel in the industry as a whole. When you will start thinking on this line, you will realize how much you need to learn. Then no role or a job can limit you or be point of distraction.
  • Finally , whichever learning area you select, keep blogging about your plan and progress just as you did this time. Let everyone contribute to your learning. Please do keep a check on the words that you use. You make a statement when you blog your thoughts. I am sure , you don't mean to hurt anyone.

please do the following steps to get your problem resolved:

1) take out an English-X Dictionary (X stands for the language which you are more comfortable to understand in) & understand the meaning of the words like SUGGESTION, ADVICE, HELP, VIEW, FEEL, THINK, etc.

2) watch alone at a silent place on your PC with headphone on your ears, the movies (I can suggest only Hindi Bollywood movies) like 3 IDIOTS, CHAK DE INDIA, NAYAK, COOLIE, TAARE ZAMEEN PAR, LAGAAN, etc.

3) take a break to visit HIMALAYAS and ISLANDS and meditate there.

4) if the problem still persists, then leave the skilled job and join a farmer, who has large field to plough with Oxes, to help him in ploughing the field. I think you'll love doing this job as ploughing is a big task, and your post indicates that you don't like doing petty tasks.

Alternative to this is to join a small Edible-Oil Mill, where seeds are grounded in traditional ways without use of machinaries. In both the cases, you'll atleast get your 2 times daily meals. This is all for you. :( :(

my Sincere Appologies & Sorry to all for my reply to this post in this way, but I don't know any other polite words for this type of fellow. I joined this site in the month of Sept'10, and since then I'm learning continuously through all the old & new posts, articles, etc. I never felt the need to post neither for help nor replied to any post for help. Whenever I needed help, I just type the keywords in the search text box & everything is already posted there earlier. And whenever anyone posted for help, I always found excellent replies by other users. But today I'm unable to control myself to post this reply, as I can't let anyone like this fellow to hurt others who readily come forward to help others with their best possible suggestions & solutions. Let him learn by himself. Sorry once again and lots of thanks to TS & Archana for their so polite still straight-forward reply.

first of al i went wrong in communicating the message and i am really sory for that. but as seniors u people hav to corect us not reacting so harsly. one person has commented very badly n i wil say he is not suitable to be a hr atall. i just request that person before saying think on wt u saying k..u dnt have any rite to talk so harshly n i realy felt bad..pls dnt reply any other member lyk this... but i m leaving this blog.its very unfortunate but a very bad behavior from a blog member. thnx seniors for giving me your outputs till now. wish u all the best. bye .

As a member who had earlier recommended you to opt for HR Generalist , cannot be here now without adding my comments on the above issue.

First and foremost, as a HR Professional , you should be careful the way you communicate, as the posts are viewed by many members , a small mistake may sent out bad signals.

Quote - "but as seniors u people hav to corect us not reacting so harsly" - seniors can correct you only after you have made your comments and members have read it. So always think twice before you type anything in a public forum, it should not in any manner hurt the feelings of any member.

I don't see anything wrong or offensive in the post of Mr. QuaMPS. He has tried to convey symbolically few things : -

- Accept help / advise / suggestions from elders
- Practice it in your life and be spirited
- Possess Self Confidence
- Love Your Job, it will love you back !!

We at citehr, doesn't wish that a member leave the forum, just because he got a unpleasant reply or happened to take a decision influenced by the comments posted in the forum.

End of the day, its you, who need to take a call on everything, be it life or work or whatever.

Road to success is not well lit and flowered , its full of thorns and hurdles.

You are idle at your work, because you are idle in your mind . As we say, "human mind is like a parachute, its of use only when u open it".

I know my & the others' comments made you feel bad.

But I think you are AGAIN making the same mistake--that of running away from the situation you are presently in.

I am speaking purely from the human psychology point-of-view--nothing to do with HR, since human psychology is closely intertwined with the core of one's behaviour, irrespective of whether one is in HR or any other field or even in personal relationships.

It's only when one hesitates to take responsibility for one's actions--out of fear for any adverse result or plain lackadaisical attitude or in a worst-case-scenario, the attitude of 'using' others--that the tendency to throw the blame/responsibility for any undesired/adverse results of one's actions happens. In your case, today it's this situation & tomorrow it could be another.

What those who gave their uncensored opinions [me included] meant & had in mind was to correct your [NOT YOU] thought process & the way you see situations & calibrate your responses.

Just because someone in this Forum said something nasty [as per your perception, mind you], you don't need to leave this Forum. To quote what Gandhi said: When you think someone insults you, there WILL ALWAYS BE multiple response options. You may get wild @ such comments, I may be able to just ignore them, another can rebut with equally well-placed comments & another may just walk off from the scene. There's nothing 'right' or 'wrong' with any response--it all depends on how one 'perceives' the situation and 'responds'. It all depends on 'HOW' the person perceives the situation & which, to an extent, decides the response.

In a lighter vein, I recollect another quote: When you think someone insulted you, Top it. If you can't top it, ignore it. If you can't ignore it, laugh at it. And if you can't laugh at it, you probably deserve it.

When you can see anything worthwhile to learn even from a so-called nasty comment, frankly maybe it's worth going thru the situation.

Just give these lines a thought--and like I always say--the Final call is your's.

I am a regular follower of cite HR.I am not a senior person but could'nt sit idle seeing this post.I truley think that the way pushpananjundaiah has expressed his query is wrong and I think he must have done this out of desparation .Every one joins for a job with lot of expectations and when things go upside down not every one in this world have the same courage to face it.

The way senoirs ( "EXCEPT QUAMPS" ) replied to the query is excellent. Even though they would have felt bad they behaved really well and replied in a dignified manner.I think it would have opened his eyes and would help him to view things through a different perspective. I belive this is the kind of behaviour and attitude that we should learn from the seniors.
