Hi Poonam,

A well -designed and administered ESS can be a powerful HR tool.

As Anisha says, ESS is industry and company specific. However there are certain issues which are common to all organisations. I have provided some of them below with pointers on questions that can be framed:

1. Quality of leadership provided by line management e.g.

a) Were you provided with sufficient information/introductions etc to deal with your new role?

b) Are you clear about your performance targets?

c) Is there enough delegation?

d) Do you feel involved in the decision making in your department?

e) Is there openness to feedback by peers and seniors?

2. Are you satisfied with the opportunities provided for growth and development

a) Training programmes/on-job training

b) Lateral movement

c) Travel to other sites/additional responsibility

d) Promotion

3. Performance Appraisal - actual vs policy

a) Is it conducted regularly?

b) Are you provided sufficient time to prepare?

c) Are you aware of how the rating scale (or whatever it is in your organisation) works?

4. Attrition issues

a) How long are you planning to stay with this organisation? 0-2yrs, 3yrs, 5 yrs and longer

5. Company Image issues

a) How will you rate your organisation as compared to others in the industry in terms of

- market performance

- customer focus

- compensation & benefits package

- employee focus

I suggest that at the outset, you (& perhaps your line mgr) sit down to discuss what areas you want to focus on in the survey, else it can become to large a questionnaire.

Secondly, you must frame the questions using grading scales and bullet options etc, so that the results are easily quantifiable. Too many open-ended questions will make it tedious for the employees to fill, the tendency will be to gloss over the actual opinions and you will not be able to get specific results.

Best wishes,

Anuradha

Hi Poonam,
Most of the members have given u valuable suggestions... however i would like to draw your attentions on few basics.. As HR professional we forget that framing few questions and getting them answered by Employees is not how you get the Survey done because the credibility of the questionnaire here is questionable..
1.Please take in to consideration the concept of reliability and validity before making the questionnaire.
2. get your objective right..
3. be clear on which dimensions of Job you want to check the satisfaction level for eg salary, culture, transparency, appraisal etc
4. make sure that the number of questions measuring each dimensions are same.. for eg if u have 5 questions on salary issues make sure culture also has only 5 questions
5. Try to makes questions which are both positive ended and negative ended...
Hope this will help u to design a standardise tool which will yield crediable data
Regards
Rajendra
