Dear Abhay,
Content of a "Safety Awareness Training course" depends upon the duration, level of participants. Noted below are the contents that can be modified to suit your requirement.
1. Impact of an accident (on - you, your family, employer. government, society)
2. Domino theory -(ancestry –fault of person – unsafe acts/conditions –accident -injury/damage)
3. Modern techniques of accident prevention.
4. Use and abuse of personal protective equipment
5. House keeping
6. Fire protection
7. Your role in accident prevention
case studies, quizes, videos may be used effectively
If you can provide exact requirement I may be able to help further.

Dear Sir, We want to start safety training for our newly established small scale chemical unit ( total strength 35-40 ). category in plant. 1. helpers - 2. operators- 3.Supervisors- B.Sc Abhay

Dear Abhay

Imparting safety training at the start of a unit is quite beneficial.

Being a chemical unit before starting safety training trainer must know the safety aspects of all the raw materials, finished products and process. Safety in transporting, storage and handling of these chemicals are important. It all depends up on what chemicals you have.

Three categories of employees- they all require safety orientation. Even if you do not conduct a separate safety awareness course indoctrination or safety orientation as we usually refer to is essential.

Later they require three different types of training.

Helpers – Training for helpers in their local language.

Impact of an accident (on - you, your family, employer. government, society)

Domino theory -(ancestry –fault of person – unsafe acts/conditions –accident -injury/damage)

Haz.com (Hazard communication)

What to do and what not to do for safety.

Use and abuse of personal protective equipment

House keeping

Fire protection

Your role in accident prevention

Operators:- Along with all the above operators must be trained in safety aspects related to their specific job.

Supervisors: For added responsibility of supervisors they require a higher level of safety training.

Along with all the above topics you may add:

In an emergency

Reporting of accidents

First Aid fundamentals

Knowing your MSDS

There are many things to be covered. Since it is only an awareness course trainer has to touch up on electrical safety, manual material handling etc which may not take much time especially if ppt is used effectively.

With the above the awareness training may take a maximum of 5 hours class room time.

For chemical factories i would suggest you to go in for
OHSAS 18000 ( Occupational Health & Safety ) Certification
which is accepted globally standard.
It will cover & solve all your queries.
If you are dealing in export
( or in case of domestic too for Branded dealers )
it will boost up your efficiency depending on the report of OHSAS 18000.

Dear Dipil, Now can you just give me an idea as to "how will you differentiate between a basic safety awareness training and a regular training course please". Regards, Kesava Pillai

Dear Sir
As per my understanding its as follows:
Basic Safety Awarnesss:
It should contain minimum the following:
1. Roles & Responsibility towards safety
2. It should cover all the hazards existing/or may arise in the plant.
3. Emphasising the concept that Incidents are mainly due to Unsafe Act of People
4. Emergency preparedness.
5. Personnel Protective Equipments
6. Housekeeping,etc
Surely the training mode and topic will change depend upon the audiance.
For a regular training course, it is bascially concentrating on a topic... Say an example, if its for Confined Space, that particular session will more concentrate deeply on the safety aspects related to Confined Space.
