HI,

would like to share the following ineresting history. In earlier 70's and eighties ( 1970 and 1980) much before the computers came in factories, there used to be a separate section called as TIME OFFICE. It used to be headed by the time keepers. he used to have assistant time keepers.

Typically in big factories with more than 500 people ther used to be a master clock at the entrance with a slot to insert a thick paper card with the employee code, dept and name written on it.

After inserting it the employee had to physically press the lever attached to the clock which then use to type the time at which the card had been punched. This was followed two to four times in a day. ( shift entry- lunch break -shift entry after lunch break - end of shift)

The assitant time keepres used to daily collect the cards then and mark attendance, absence accordinlgy and add it to the monthly attendance advise to the separate pay roll department.

They also used to phsyically mark, leave, absent, time off, holiday, eraly going an late coming on the punch card. ( With a rubber stamp or hand writing)

Each master clock used to have a big steel cupboard with card slots for keeping the cards and it used to be with a lock and key arrangement.

Managing this entire process was what the time office used to do. Once in a week the time keeper used to set the master clock for accurate timing.

There was no software then, and also the system of identity cards was rarely followed.

Kind regards
