Dear Partho,
I believe 2 years back there was a big explosion in IDL chemicals at Hyderabad and two people died some were injured, on investigation it was noticed that the explosion was due to cell phone.
With this context would like to communicate to you is there is lot problem with the cell phone hence better to avoid usage of cell phones at work place.
This should be irrespective of the position and gender, you should provide mobiles for the employees in critical postions and also specifically ask them to restrict the cell phone usage to their respective cabins / admn office.
You should also specify in your policy that the mobile other than company provided will be seized by the security at the gate and beyond security gate don't allow any un-official mobile, the same is applicable to the visitors also.
The employees who are in postion of company mobiles should also not to use the mobiles at prodcution area / work places, if found discontinue the facility.
Some of the exemptions that need to be done are in emergencies ie., some employees family members are hospitalized etc then they have to obtain an approval from the HR head and carry the mobiles in side but the usage should be in their boss cabin or administrative area only.
The visitors may create issue, saying that their cell phone are used by security or some body else and got damaged in this cotext you should have a provsion for storing at security, pegion racks with lock and key ( specifically with two keys ) required.
In your policy you should also spell out the disciplinery actions you are going to take on the employees who violates the instructions and display a notice on the same giving a 15 days advance notice and implement.
As I was with a chemical plant, we have implemented this system, there was lot of resistance, to avoid usage of company phones in the absence of mobiles we have provided two coin phones also.

Hi all,
My opinion is don't strictly adhere to mobile usage policies.
It depends on the nature of industry. In manufacturing nature of industries the excess usage of mobile may create dangers.
So in others like IT and other service industries mobiles not harmful.
Compnaies should have the policies of limited usage of mobiles allowed. Because anytime information loss creates incurable results.
Reducing of mobile usage can be affordable other than complete ban of usage of mobile.

Dear All,
I feel that mobile use can restricted but not so strictly. otherwise employee will not feel freedom at work place. at manufacturing it is very much essential to stop but for other sector it should resrict.

Hi,
Any new technology in vogue brings more of nuisance than the discipline, specially in India. People know only cell phone usage but never bother to know what is a cell phone etiquette.
That is the reason we need to implement policies with every activity in general
We have asked our employees to keep the cell phone in silent mode, they need to go out of work place to take the personal call, also in case of meetings no one is supposed to carry the phone in to the meeting/conference room. One may take prior permission if expecting some important official call only.

Use of Mobiles during working hours is really hazardus for good office culture and manners.
This cause frequent interruptions during meetings, seminars, conferrences and most importantly morning meetings or even during talking to boss or subordinates peoples attention is diverted and agenda is shifter due this uncertain mobile calls.
We have restricted employees and ask them to use office telephones numbers for incomming emergency messages from family or friends. No outgoing is allowed. Mobile use is restricted unless its urgent.....

Dear
Employees should be made aware that their mobile use can easily cause distraction and irritation amongst fellow colleagues and should take steps to keep intrusive effects to a bare minimum:

Employees should be made aware that their mobile use can easily cause distraction and irritation amongst fellow colleagues and should take steps to keep intrusive effects to a bare minimum:
- Mobile phones should be set to silent/vibrate in the work environment.
- If it is necessary to make or answer a call then it should be done so in a private area.
- If it is necessary to speak on the phone in the presence of others then do so in low tones.
- Don’t interrupt colleagues by answering your mobile phone.
- Don’t answer your mobile whilst in a meeting.
- Ensure that you choose a ringtone that isn’t likely to drive colleagues around the bend.
