This is very first time I am participating in this kind of open discussion. I have gone though nearly all the comments posted on you request.

I would like to share my views that JOB SECURITY is something, which is there in your inner soul and in your IQ. Job security is not How secure your Job is…., but the job security is how competent you are to get another job quickly.

At last I am not giving you any advice on your worry, in-fact I am just trying to tell you the grounds of feeling secure and un-secure. I don’t remember the year….but sometime 10 – 15 years back one government undertaking has terminated some very high profile engineers, because of shutting down one unit. This can happen anywhere. So, you should believe your own competence

Further more, I would like to inform you …. Not only you but to all that I have recently started a Recruitment Consultancy (named as “Falah Recruitment Consultants”) and I have left my precious job for that. I was working as Manager – Sales Coordination in one limited firm. The only one security I have is … that I am able to get a good job whenever I will take decision for.

So, analyze your own competence and take the step.

Do not quit your government job. I believe that if you have the requisite experience, you can take up to 6 years of unpaid leave and still retain your job. I know a number of people who have done that. This will allow you to sample life in the private sector before taking a decision. Do it for 2 years first, extend your unpaid leave if you want to continue or go back to the power sector.

Secondly, in the private sector, you will not have a lot of ancillary benefits that you get in the public sector that cannot be monetized. Furthermore, the pressure to perform is much more than in the public sector and you got to need to cope up, especially if you are in the public sector for long.

So don't quit. Take the unpaid sabbatical offered and rest your mind by trying out the private sector instead of giving yourself a headache.

Also consider the 6PC pay hikes and various incentives to performing sectors into consideration. Again, don't quit. Based on some of the other responses, you may be asked to pull papers thro various govt offices and if you cannot do the small illegalities on the way, your bosses will not be happy. In the govt sector, it is the other way around. You don't need to pull papers - people will come to you to pull papers. Get the point?


Since I have had an experience of working under both Public Sector and Private sector organisations, I would suggest that you compare the total package of MONEY + WORKING CONDITIONS. By working conditions I mean- Freedom to work, Freedom to Think, Freedom to Opine, Freedom to Learn, Freedom to Enjoy Life. I will give you following quotation to ease your decision making.

Hi,Dont leave your present job now, take medical leave for two months in your govt organisation, and go to new private sector then see your attachment wihth that company you can able to grow well as well as you can able move any other private sectors with more than hike of your private sector salary then deside you have to stay in your govt orgamisation or private.Private Sector:Work like a dog become like a king.Advantages:Salary, Knowladge, Experience, Techical expertise, Smartness, Hardwork, bad politics, good politics,finaly your growth,No Pain No Gain!Disadvantages:Job Security, PoliticsGovernment Sector:you know about it.RegardsParthasarathy9884962576

If you are confident of your abilities and deliverables, please go ahead. you will prosper. Please evaluate the package carefully, is it really double? Evaluate very carefully if there are ESOPs.

hi as per my thought that its the time to go on peak achievement, as per you are said that you are in govt. sect. I thought that there are bounded level but private sector is huge opportunity going up on daywise.
you should grab them and be leave that bounded sector.

I too agree with MR. Suri Babu Komakul. You don't leave your present job, take a long leave, go there and work for some years, earn well and come back and rejoin the Govt. job.
It would be fair for you, I believe.

Hello all and thanks for your valuable inputs.

I have been doing a lot of soul searching these last few days as to what i really want. This seems to be one of the toughest decisions in my life. True, my current govt job gives me all the peace and time what one can possibly want. The flip side of it is poor growth, pathetic work culture, having to deal with incompetent colleagues and staff etc etc. When i think of the pvt sector i can think of faster growth, challenging work environment, opportunity to learn etc etc. But then in the pvt sector there would be a constant pressure to perform and deliver the goods. Higher degree of accountability leading to lesser time for one own self. And obviously the salary would be double, growing by leaps and bounds for those who perform well.

I am confused clearly speaking. I want to take a clear cut decision. I dont want to do a two month experiment. Is there any one who has faced such a dilemma before? Or is going through one right now.

I have already recieved the appointment letter and have only two months after which i have to join.

The tax liability on the ctc offered by the pvt sector org is almost the same as in my current govt salary. The advantage is that there is a non taxable part in the ctc offered by the pvt org on which i think i will only have to pay a fbt.

Don’t try it for 2 months... that’s not enough time to judge. Can you take a 2 year unpaid leave from the Govt org?
