Its a good question. But the answer differs from boss to boss as the character of the human being differs. In any other company the boss has to play a role as a friend, boss, guide, mentor or even as a brother. But in most of the company that is not happening.

Here some of our members written that their bosses are behaving like a friend. While reading this itself gives the good impression about them. Upto my knowledge i can say that "the man (Boss) who recognise the hard work of the employee or subbordinates , i mean to say that they have to give respect for the work done by an employee thru the way of doing performance appraisal at good rate, promotion, sal.hike, by giving some awards or atleast by giving a word of appreciation will do a lot from the "BOSS".So the boss will always do a dual role like first he/she understand that they are atleast humanbeings, then they came to the position as boss. so they have to look back the way they are coming from step by step.

If am wrong correct me.

I read an interesting article from McKinsey Quarterly regarding bad bosses (McKinsey calls them "jerks), the topic we are discussing currently. Thought of sharing with you all. This article is authored by a professor in Stanford University and he strongly argues that companies can take specific and interrelated steps to root out jerks and bullies and build a more "civilized workplace". He adds...
"Because companies that harbor jerks may also suffer from reduced levels of creativity and innovation, as well as impaired or dysfunctional cooperation within and outside the organization. That is NO small matter in an increasingly networked world."

Its not like bosses are only bosses but not a guide or mentor. Bosses help u learn things ,sometime by being your friend & sometime by being a boss or by scolding you. But their main motive is to get best out of you. You may feel bad about his bossy attitude sometimes but in long run it always help you. Now let me tell you one incidence: one of my friend was not happy wid boss coz his boss gives more imp. to his colleague though the colleague is technically is less sound & my friend is more. his colleague is given more opportunities than him. his boss told him i do not have confidence on you. my friend was depressed by his bossy attitude. he told me the things. I asked him to tell me each & every incidence since he joined the org. I found from the day one he started complainig for work, started talking about his rights. I found the behaviourial problem in my friend.I told him its not because of ur less knowledge but because of your wrong attitude which is prompting your boss to be bossy wid you. Sometimes bosses have to be bossy to bring the things on right track. they have to learn the art of how to be friendly in a formal way so that team members feel free to tell him their problems & views at the same time always be ready to obey him. Bosses do not get so friendly that team member do not take their orders for granted.

This is my first post after ages, anyway, it's good to be back!! :)
I think the simple answer to this question is that this reflects the difference between a "Boss" and a "Leader"!! At times Bosses are just that and at times Bosses are Leaders as well. Bosses direct you and let you know what is expected of you where as a Leader may giude you and help u and mentor you to achieve what is expected!!
A Boss will say "Go" and a Leader will say "Let's go"!!
I have worked under so many bosses in one organization and I was fortunate enough to gain so much from each one of them. Some were simple Bosses but others were true leaders. Even these Leaders differ in many ways, some influence u thru their Charismatic Characteristics whereas others influence you thru their ability and Authority where they coax you in to achieving things which you thought were never possible.
However, I think it is upon us to get the best out of a Boss or a Leader.

gone is the concept of "BOSS", today we need mentors, guide or leaders.
earlier to this we were believing in the concept of boss but after a time with all changes and flexibility in the environment , the need of the day made it fail.
after that we realised to modify the concept of boss and that is done with the emergence of "MENTOR", who inspires, guides and work for employee's professional as well as personal development.
so th BOSS is still the BOSS, who are in the favour of this, but a company looking fro growth and sucess should not acept these

u will find aal kind of persons in the organisation but the man who works as MENTOR, goes for the long time, and acepted by the fellow: which is the real success of any leader(according to the theory of aceptance)
otherwise its a fail in long run

It is similar to ask Grass not be Green and Rock not be Hard.
A fabricating picture of Boss seems be embossed as not caring or self-centric person. I feel every action generated by Boss leads to a learning experience. In long term learning experience, the action or behavior of Boss, have something to learn.
A goody-goody approach will lead us to nothing. Individuals learn more from mistakes and that leads to proper crafting of the skills and competencies.
