Its really interesting & giving knowledge, good topic.
It happens in life, but when it happens in family then there is an problem. In family parents sometimes supportive or negative in this regards. Whilst they know that this guy is right. Despite the fact parents or the family members not give him support. Sometimes it happens that you are thinking you are cleaver smart, talented but it your preception. You are not looking beyound this boundary line. Whilst ground reality is totaly different.

Ya! u may be more intelligent than anybody else, but the question is will it help u to become successful. I have evidence that the GM there who is taking ur interview, if he finds that u r more intelligent than him, he may not hire u for fear. What will u do then?

I have a friend who has an elderly boss and most of the time, the boss agrees to what my friend suggest. Its just that my friend has come out with modern and advanced perspective and education nd the boss is not quite well versed with the modern and technological advancement. Does that mean that my friend is more intelligent? I believe No! The boss has immense knowlege and experience. I think there is a difference between intelligence and knowledge.

But nevertheless there are people who can take and make quick and favorable decisions. Is it that what we call intelligence? Can somebody define intelligent person? I will be happy to know the answer. But my opinion is that everybody has his/her own thinking and decisive power. It depends on situation how well he/she uses the opportunity and decide favourably.

Hi,

When one is more intelligent than the boss, it is safer to throw forth ideas and suggestions but not ina self-seeking manner. Rather by getting one's boss to buy into the idea and push it out as your boss' idea at a management level with most of the recognition going the boss' way. The truth is most humans are complex, attention-seeking and being a competitive market-place, would love to be on top (power or position-hunger). The subordinate thus has to play it diplomatically to keep the job whilst not discomfiting the boss technically. Remember the boss ultimately has the power. Tis way a balance is maintained not to stifle ideas and to keep all happy. I utilised this approach successfully until i was asked to represent my ex-boss at an event . That was when my talent shone throug. Patience, diplomacy and genius.

Conversely, if a subordinate is more brilliant, one has to utilise such a talent to further one's targets as it will ultimately be attributed to one's managemnet savvy and all credit or discredit eventually lands on the boss' table. So, it is best not to stifle such talent but to encourage tactically so as not to jeopardise one's standing while tapping inotmthe talent-mine.

I left my first job within 3 years because of my boss. He was not more swift, mature, intelligent than me (I am being very gentle here) but had spent more years than me in the organisation. Actually, there was inter unit transfers in HR department and it was felt that I am too inexperienced to head the department for the site. He was placed above me. I had been working for more than 2.5 years happily and productively and was never looking for change. After my new boss joined site, within 4 months I decided to quit and did quit.
This is what happened with me.

Nice topic that you have posted, I would say that never mind who is superior or who is inferior either Physically or mentally (Physically i mean to say the age, designation factor, mentally i mean to say knowledge aspect), Keep in mind to share the resources and gain knowledge even if your kid is more inteligent than you in some ways... accept that and be ready to gain knowledge what he has. Now a days in the competetive world we should be flexible and be ready to adapt according to the work and social environment.
Technically there is a proof that hot body is made cool by taking the heat off and viceversa. Similarly by sharing knowledge of others we could be balanced each other.
So i conclude by saying in this situation we should accept the temporary defeat and to be flexible to share the knowledge resoureces that is available in plenty in the external world....

While I like and agree with Khalid's views, I am inclined to play devil's advocate and ask what kind of intelligence are we discussing - viz.
Knowledge
Emotional
Spiritual
Financial
How difficult would it be to interact regularly with an individual (boss / family member) who badly lacks in some or all of the above?
Any views?

Hi all,
Let me share my experiences related with the above thread.
In some case, when we have staffs more intelligent than us, we should thank to them. We can manage them as our advisor for some cases or we upgrade them into another position that related with their competencies.
Or if we think that we are more intelligent than our boss, the first think that we can do is to be mature facing this situation by :
- Not underestimate to our boss
- Not blaming to our boss when doing wrong
- Be smart and prepare how we can develop our organization in so we can upgrade our position itself

This eleven year old thread from the archives has been unearthed to discuss about the impact of having intelligent bosses or colleagues in office atmosphere.
It is a pity that Ryan's question has been unanswered. Since we are discussing about office working, according to me what is more pertinent is Emotional Intelligence.
A great deal of emphasis is generally laid to have the competency in Functional or Domain skills.
Expertise in this is taken as a measure of intelligence. At best this can be a combination of subject knowledge and IQ. IQ and Functional/Domain expertise are bound to vary from person to person.
Emotional Intelligence level is the one that has to be considered for cohesive working, team building, successful in operation and results etc
