I have recently joined as Manager-HR in an infrastructure company.
As of now there was no HR dept. in the company and now I am supposed to develop HR dept here.
I am confused about how to design a Holiday calender for employees as this company has got its branches in different states of India and as we all know the holidays would be different in different states depending upon the festivals celebrated there; accept government holidays.
Kindly guide me to design a proper calender so that co-ordination during holiday in a state would not be a problem.
I hope, I am clear and waiting for your response.
Thanks and Regards

Dear Vijay,
This calendar is extremely good for the reference of Management and for HR People... But still we need to issue separate lists to down the line people.
People in different states may think that the other people are lucky coz they are getting more holidays and we are unlucky and vice-versa... Hence, we can prepare this way, as it gives more clarity and understanding but provide separate lists to their respective offices...
After all, its an usual human tendency to feel that way..
Please correct me if I stand wrong... Views can be given

Bifurcate the total Holiday list into 3 parts viz, National Holidays, Religious Holidays and Domicile Holidays in which National Holidays will be same in all the branches across India, Give options in Religious and Domicile Holidays as Restricted Holidays wherein Branch Head can choose any 3 from 6 holiday as per the List or 5 from the 10 list as the case may be.

Vijaya, You could use the following format (which we use at our orgn) - 2 sets of holiday lists - 1 org specific, another location specific. PSA Noel

Dear Vijay,
First of all pl. try to match the holiday requirement of your customers. In case there is none please also find out the calendar being followed by other major organisations, if any, in your industry. If nothing specific is identified therein, in that case please take the calendar of holidays of the Central Govt. for the lead.
You will agree, that you cannot have calendar for holidays statewise for each of the units, as such in the total calender please keep slots for two holidays vacant which to be notified by the state units, keeping into consideration requirement of local nature, under intimation to you .
I am sure, this will serve your purpose.

Dear Vijay,
You don't require speical knowledge to prepare the holiday list, you need to know statewise no. of NFH to be given in a year and compulsary holidays. Pragna HRCS has given beautifully the details of tamil nadu.
For KARNATAKA please find details
COMPULSORY HOLIDAYS - Republic Day,
May Day
Idependence Day
Gandhi Jayanthi
Kannada Rajyotsava i.e., state formation day
and any other 5 days in consultation with your staff of respective branches. Their is no separate form for it and copy of the holiday has to be submitted to LABOUR OFFICER concerned division for information and no prior approval is required from the labour department of Karanatak region.
