Hello Pragya
As many said, it is a cluttered market for Spoken English and Personality Development. I second the idea of going for a franchisee. This will mitigate your efforts in pulling students to your institute. Also you can think of widening your horizons in English offering. For example, you can think of a different module for Housewives. You can devise a module for corporate employees; like, drafting, letter writing, presentation skills and things like this. You can open an English Club in your premises ( practice classes) where your old and new students come on their own and do practice with minimal supervision and guidance. This will keep your institute house-full to create a better image. Think of some innovative methods to keep yourself taller...Good Luck

Dear Pragya,

I understood what you want to do and i appreciate your interest. because you are in chennai, you must have come across many institutes.

I suggest the following:

a) you must know what to teach and how to teach as english is same to everyone. After teaching, only the level of speaking may differ from person to person.

b) In stead of spending time in framing the syllabus, get material from someone but don't go for franchisee network as it is costly.

c) You must know how to teach a tamil medium student/english medium student etc.

d) The best way to start is to have individual coaching system at the beginning for sometime. It has its own advantage.

e) Have someone as mentor to guide you for at least one year.

f) Start working for your monthly income in the beginning.

g) For any guidance, you can call me on 9364292705. I am in Erode and an ex serviceman, retired from Indian Air Force and am working in Indian Overseas Bank and have been running a spoken english institute successfully for adults
