It is not important to have a learning at Services or Manufacturing sector. The most important element is to excel in profession, that is only possible if organisation realy provides opportunity to learn and perform. So both sector can provide opportunity to learn.

If thing on long term perspective i.e if you have manufacturing industry experience you can easily switch into service sector but if you have service industry it will became little bite difficult to switch industry.
As already some people mention in manufacturing industry you will get chance to deal with topics like compliance, labor law, trade union labor welfare. As became good HR personnel i would recommend to you have manufacturing experience.

I want to add little bit being a professional from both backgrounds, I can say one thing that to learn systems and procedures one should prefer the manufacturing sector in his early days of profession which is risk free & stabilised environment incomparison with service sector. You can shift into service sector after having sufficient knowledge in systems and procedures to enjoy, adopt, learn, implementation of latest HR techniques. I mean experience from manufacturing sector is a base and from there you can shine up well with the knowledge of service sector.
There is a great demand for those who knows both.

All your opinions are good and thought provoking.
In my opinion both sectors are good. It is advisable in the initial stage to take up a career in a manufacturing sector and at the age of 40+, go to service industry and settle down.
With the previous experience of manufacturing sector, shifting to service industry is easy. But with the experience of service sector, it will not be too easy to go to manufacturing sector. Even in manufacturing sector, it is always good to take up career in the Factory side than take up a job in corporate office or Head office of a manufacturing sector.

Basically HR role is common for both Manufacturing & Service industry. The difference will be in its applicability.
When speaking about applicability, both manufacturing & service sectors has its own pros & cons. It purely depends on area where you want to persue your career, select that field.

Hi, great contributions by all. HR itself is a service sector as it is a support function and not main function like production. So HR provides services in manufacturing as well as service sector and as rightly said by many the nature of services would change. If you see your interest in handling things like charter of demand, suspensions and inquiries, handling dynamism of unionised environment (though its also there in service sector the severity is lesser) etc you are a mfg HR person else you are a service person. Training will be a common portfolio.
