Dear Mr. Simhan
Here the debate is for office premises and not for any factories, any construction sites or any Mining work places. Here I hope there will not be any safety problem arise. Whenever the children are coming they will be sent in a room where the toys and dolls are place and it will be playing with it and to take care of the children the office boy or the cleaning lady can be deployed. Some biscuits and chocolates will be given to the children they are going to play there and sleep when they feel tired after playing. Hence there will not be any problem in bringing the children to office.

Dear Bhaskar,

I am with you as far as the company organising a place, procuring the essential toys/ items to keep the kids amused and paying for these.

What I differ on is that why is there resistance always when some token payment is recommended from the employees as incentive perks to the staff who would be doing the looking after? Are the employees so poorly paid that they cannot pay a small token amount to the person who shall be taking care of their child thus allowing them to work in peace? As it is, it shall be only for a few days in a year.

What would be the case where an org decides NOT to allow children at the workplace, then either they or their spouse would have had to sit home and do baby sitting thus letting go of a few days' salary.

Let it be a WIN-WIN for both. Let me assure you, even if this is organised, you will still find the parents working with half their attention on how their kid is. Also, all staff may not be willing to take on this additional responsibility.

It is a live problem. Why not plan for it?

Ashok

Hi,
The law says" if you are hiring more than 30 or more female employees, you must have creche house with toys, attendent , milk, biscuits etc. you can not escape from this basic compliance.

I hope you all have heard about the creche facilities being provided at the places where mostly the ladies employees work. As your organization doesn't face this problem of bringing the children to work whole year long you can have an on and off facility. you need to employ a person on temporary basis or you can borrow from one of your staff his or her trustworthy maid to take care of the day to day needs of these children and hire additionally a good lady of young age (also temporarily) to organize small games, colouring competitions, drawing competition, clay modelling, rhyme singing, story writing etc. she can organize nature walk in a near by park as well if you want the children to be away from the office.

Dear Bhaskar,
I have worked in a University; even there there are safety problems. Suppose a child slips and falls and is injured or if two kids fight and one is injured who will be held responsible? Hence, there should be clear policies laid down. I do not know the situation in India.
Have a nice day.

Dear Simhan Sir,
In India, as per Factories Act, BOCW Act and Contract Labour Act, we must provide creche if there are more than 30 female workers engaged in the work area. One Ayah, Attendants, Milk and Biscuits for the children, some games and toys should be provided.
I am working in a construction company, and while I was in Hyderabad I used to maintain the creche with some play area and engaged 2 female attendants who can take care of those children and some food and I provided 3 black boards and colour chalks and instructed that care takers to teach alphabets and numerals in Telugu, Hindi and English for those kids available in the Labour Camp. Some nearby village kids also used to come and learn from that creche.
That's the reason I gave reply like that. If my reply hurts you or your feelings I sincerely seek apologies from you.

Dear Bhaskar,
Thank you for the clarification of the rules in India. You have neither offended me or hurt my feelings. I am a life-long learner.

Hi Amit,
There is another option. The company can tie up with a child care facility near the office where the kids can be dropped on the way to office. Parent can visit them a couple of time if required.
This will give the right message to these employee, that the company care for them and on the other hand not get into any legal or productivity related issues also.
Warm regards
Parag
