I don't think this person realises that his company must go through a certification agency to be accredited.
The agency will provide all the necessary information. BUT it costs money!! This is not something you can do without going through a proper agency.

I think you have been asked only to update the existing ISO Systems. The first step would be to update it to ISO 9001: 2008. This is very easy. You can ask your registrar to convey the requirement of the new Standard and they will give the details.
Study the procedures existing thoroughly and look for
A - Adequacy
C - Compliance and
E - Effectiveness.
ISO 9000 is a beautiful system. It requires the true commitment from the Top Management. Many companies maintain the system for name sake and do not take the real advantage of such a good system.

First of all, ISO-9000 is a very useful tool for streamlining your processes and systems. Therefore, a company must evolve its own manual and documents. Every company has different needs and documentation will differ very widely. Dont go for ISO-9000 just for the sake of certificate alone. And if u want certificate only, there are many low grade consultants available in market who will write everything for u and will show u the tricks and shortcuts to achieve "pass" in ISO exam. But thats foolish. Real value is achieved when u develop your own systems in line with ISO, involve internal resources, people and management. The process will then be enjoyable and beneficial.

forget all the perceptions.. its so simple..
ISO 9000 is clearly defined in the standards first clause (4.1 general)
Identify your processes, define controls (what to check, when to check, how to, whom will do it) . implement it and record the findings, improve it..
Then, ur company will be having a Quality Policy and Quality Objectives..
9of course the objectives have to be measurable and specific with time period)
Break down the objectives in to departmental objectives and targets, ask each dept to make an action plan for that.. and monitor those..

Hi,
From the mail it is not clear that whether ISO standard is already implemented in your company or not. If it is already implemented, consult with the certification body to get the changes to update it into ISO 9001:2008, do a gap analysis and mentor your practitioners about the changes.
If you are asking about the first time implementation of the standard, first you provide training in all levels regarding the importance of ISO and the benefits. Then conduct gap analysis, the set your goals and objectives and start working in the documentation part.

Certification assessments, or periodic surveillance audits, against the ISO 9001:2000 Standard can alone be executed by an evaluator from a certification body merging the accreditation requirements. Still it is surely feasible, and in some cases suitable, to carry on the two assessments at the same time. This can decrement overall time and potentially provide benefits in terms of incorporated findings.

I would advice you to consult some ISO Service advisor if your organization is new and if its is first time first.

Following are requirements to get ISO 9001 -QMS Certification,

1.Your organization needs to have process and procedures for each department. Though ISO 9001 had mandated only 6 processes to get ISO certification.(Document control, Record control,CA process,PA process,NC process,CCR process etc)

2.Your organization needs Quality Policy , Quality Manual and Quality objectives for overall QMS framework

3. Your organization needs to generate records of Quality management system after implementation, This will help auditors to verify that procedures and processes related to QMS are followed and adhered

4.One this is done, Final next is Application for certification. Outside agency will come and will do document review audit ,also called first round audit and will submit their observation and non conformities.

They will assign some to your organization to close these observations and non conformities if any

5.Final stage in this process is Certification audit which is also called Second audit to review and verify weather suggested changes are followed and implemented.

6.Then agency will award to your organization an ISO 9001-QMS Certificate which will be valid for 3 yrs.

Each yr. you have to conduct Two internal audits and one final surveillance audit by third party to verify effectiveness of QMS system.
