Just refer your appointment order. If there is a clause mentioned about notice period required before leaving the organisation, in that case either you have to serve the notice period or settle the notice period by making payment of the unserved days. Notice period is concerned from the date of the letter you have sent. No verbal communication is useful in this matter.

May be you thought that your old company will not be happy with you if you told them in advance that you are looking out for a better opportunity...
