Dear
Vikas
Even I am facing the same problem in my present org,
and i also shared the problem with the seniors of citehe
and i received lot of response and whatever suggestions i
got and got benefit from them would like to share you.
-As u just joined the firm it will take some time to get adjust.
-Keep patience and be polite.
-focus on other employees as u will maintain coordial relationship with them
they will be your spokeperson.
-be object oriented, solve one's problem immediately.
-do your own work and let the employee come to u to take their problems
-as u are hr ther would be lot of issues of employee to take their attendance
leave, compensation, grievance to take any issue and develop employee friendly policies, like 5 days working,2 or 4 saturday off, employee recognition & reward policy.
even keep an award for him as well,May be "Loyality Award"as he is serving org since years.
-Through all this u would be able to make space and idetity in the office.
once you will start doing all this u urself will feel that u dont have time to focus ur Accountant & his attitude.
When ur mind will be directed toward the work, you wouldnot get time to concentrate on him.
-Take it easy and be cool because being an HR manager the for most quality is
Patience .
because
"you need to deal with human being not with machine
and human being are not being operated throug fuel but through
good relationship and maintaining relationship will take time."
Plz try this and share ur exp
if any help,mail me

Our friends have definitely given you good insights. In addition, let us also understand that seniors (in a conservative work environment) sometimes consider new, younger managers (even if experienced) to be 'not so capable'. The ego issue may come in when there is a disparity shown by the management towards the new employee in terms of attention, support, salary..
Best is to let the issue wear out, keep limited contact, plan and interact in advance so that any delay tactics can be handled. Last, but not the least, prove why you are the Manager-HR. Sometimes, achievement of milestones can change the attitude of seniors towards new employees. Two months is too short for you to deliver, so work on your areas of delivery.
All the best!!

Dear Vikas
Please go throuth the several replies given by our friends which is more useful to the freshers like you to perform effective HR functions. I need not tell you more than that. But, as a Retired Gazetted Officer of a Government Department, I intend to give some feed back in this regard
In every office whether it is Government, Private Sector, Industry, Corporate Offce, Regd.Company, similar situations may arise to all. There are some kind of personalities who always think that they knew everything by virtune of seniority in the firm and try to dominate on others. Such kind of persons should be tackled in a specalized manner such that they must realise the others individual capacities, concepts, personlity traits, vocational skills etc., Any individual must " turn the page and learn the work" You are now on the first step in HR arena. You have to face many such problems in future. My best advice to you is to " keep silence" wth the Head Accountant. You concentrate your mind on your HR functions to perform in a systematic and effective way. Minimize your contacts with him. Restrict your activities with him as far as possible unless and otherwise there is need according to official procedures, process and Administrative necessities. Always maintain humourous mood with your official collegues. Your sincerity, honesty, workmindedness, initiative, zeal and industry, tact and temper, responsiveness, commitment, regularity, must teach him a lesson despite his seniority position. Nobody is perfect in any field. Every human being must learn some qualities from fellow humn beings. Respect cannot be demanded from any one. It is a reciprocal process. Give respect and take respect is the common phenomena. jYou may improve your HR skills while officating your duties. This will definetely reflect on your Head Accountant. Don's hesitate to talk to him at times of need. You elaborate your concepts, your HR streams, plans while making discussions with your collegues, subordinates, superior authorities which will fetch you to withstand for a future developmental process in your career and continue to explore the possibilities to develop your knowledge, competencies, skills in HR functions. All these qualities strengthen your performance in HR field. By observing this tendency in your mind, our Head Accountant brother may change his mindset and definitely follow suit to meet your needs in the official atmosphere.

Dear
This is a turning point to show your abilities to head HR department. As a HR Head you are giardian for all employees in official way. You can not be aloof which will diminish your career. Also, you are supposed to talk with him on official issues. I udnerstand he will not speak face to face.
You talk to your boss who is the hed of your unit to arrange for a get togather meeting. There you table activities of HR and relationship with other departments to run the business smoothly.
Make others to understand that you are a part of company and working like them.
If it is not feasible you explian the situation to your head of the business and let him to understand that you will cooperate in all official way but can not tolerate domination.
Then, you have a meeting with him during lunch or take him out and explain him that you are not his enemy and you will not block his working. He is heading Accoutns departmetn and you are heading HR department. The difference is age and expereince. Also, Make sure that he is respected always.
But at any tiem do not disucss about his attitude with others which will create the situation worse.

Hi Vikas,
As everybody else says..this is an ego related issue. Ignore him and just act as you would to anybody else in the company. You shouldnt lower yourself to his level. Be polite to him as you would to anyone else, that is my suggestion. If he does not change that is his problem, but then you havent made things worse by acting as childish as he have.
good luck

Hi,
Totally agree with Pankaj. In every organisation certain number of old employees will be there. Admitting a new person with a new position will be a difficuilt problem with every employee. But it takes a lot of timeto adjust with a new person. So being a new employee and an HR Manager first you have to have a hold on each employee and take the people in your hand. Of course a senior most officila will definitely like to address him sir, but calling a person sir will never make a harm to you on the other hand it will help you to get out of the problems very soon. Slowly slowly you adopt the strategy of holing the people and later you impose what you want to implement. Always slow and stedy wins the race. DO not follow all gossips given by other employees. Get a control on every thing. I also faced such situations when i joined the organisation newly. But i made the strategy of keepeing a hold on all employees by different methods. simple simple words can make a person helpful in many ways.
some of the tips are
> Say gud morning to each employee irrespective of the grade , designation etcc.
2. Find some time to talk to them openly what is there problems and grievences.
3. Talk to them about their family , background etc.
Hope this can hlep you much in working with a cordial way rather than keeping ego and hatred

Dear Vikas,
In your capacity as HR Manager, often you would have this situation arise where the the actusl person concerned may not be you but the Head accountant and the H.O.D of another department, who too may have joined recently.
If this was the case, how would you manage the situation? Whom would you ask to do what, when and how? How would you ensure that the office atmosphere was positive and productive?
To me your ability to have an 'internal discussion' on the matter has only caused you to have serious long term negative consequences both for yourself and the office.
think about it.

Vikas,
There is no need to caal him SIR....as RESPECT is earned not DEMANDED. You cant respect someone if you dont feel like respecting and respect has to come from within. In our office we address MD(british) b name and Director(German) by name, i fail to understand why we Indians are so much obssessed with words like SIR/MA'AM?
